The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Those that buy less than a dozen chicks and eggs and expect to hit the ground producing quality chicks are the ones you can quickly spot as trying to make a buck. I try to buy 20 or so and then cull back. I do not sell my culls for breeding - I sell my culls to local Hispanics that work on surrounding farms for eating. This breed is probably the worst I have seen for color and posture - all over the board!! I know my lemons will get better and I continue to breed - but for now I take the best that I have and go with it. I had no idea in the beginning that I would experience this or I would have left the lemons alone. I think I have a good looking flock and people that have seen them in person agree.... could they be better - sure..... and they will be.

If you run across that perfect batch of eggs that meet SOPs each time...... send me some.

I have had my lines so long I don't even remember where I got my original birds. I did add some of Julies birds about 2yrs ago? it was the year after she imported the black cockerel, and were birds from that first hatch. Those are the first new birds I have added in a long time.

Here are some of last years birds. My hens never leave the place. I never sell or put them down. They stay and play mom even if they aren't laying until they die. I have some I don't think have even played mom in a few years, but, I love them, so.. old or young they stay. Its the cockerels I change out.

This splash was spending her nights in a carrier so her feathers are not the best here.

Has anyone heard of Carrey Brit from Oklahoma. I have a trio of Buff I bought from a semi local judge that he says came from there. They are huge................... Buff is not my favorite color but I am impressed with their sheer size. They seem to be tighter feathered that the young pair, B/B/S, I got from Jeremy who I believe said they came from Justus..... Do different colors have different feather configurations? I am excited about having these birds but have never shown any of my birds of any breed yet. I will be taking a good look at what is shown in Stockton later this month.

I haven't had the opportunity of working with any of these Lemons, but I would not hesitate to introduce some quality lines like Doug's, Fred's, Tony's or Terry's line to better the size. I have yet to see an Akers Orp with a bad tail. I would think within 2 to 3 seasons you would have these Lemons to the point of quality that would be acceptable. The Buffs are the most built up in the USA. You can benefit from the large heads, wide chests and wide backs. That is how Doug said he culls. That is how Fred culled. I would think you could do the same in that amount of time.
