The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Roger - your birds are looking great. I definitely see Winston in your big boy, and your black pullet is really, really looking wonderful.

Cowchick - Glad to have you here - please post pictures of your birds - we love to see pictures.

Jeremy - Love the photo of your "bathing beauties"

Jon - I was looking on E-bay recently and saw quite a lot of auctions for Lemons. I have to say I only saw a couple that looked good (these were Richard's I think). The rest of them looked like darker Buffs to me - though I will confess that I don't know much about the Lemons. It seemed like there were a several auctions that were in GA and these looked pretty grim.

Donna - Welcome to the thread. Thanks for the compliment. Trust me, once you get these English Orps, nothing will ever measure up to them. The pictures are beautiful, but in person they are sooooooooo much better.

SewandGrow - The feathers on the American Orps are tighter than the UK Orps. You will definitely notice the loose feathering on your UK chicks as they get older. I don't believe the feathering has anything to do with color, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Julie - Yes indeed, Minvera and Winston have produced some AWESOME birds. I am sure hoping to get a few more Winston/Minerva chicks this spring.

Thanks Joy.

These chickens bring me so much happiness, I feel silly sometimes just sitting out there watching the birds free range but they just make me smile.

I always have my camera handy for shots like that one.

Yes indeed. And Octavia is absolutely lovely. Thanks for posting the photos. Can I get some hatching eggs when/if one of my girls goes broody again?

Cheers,
Donna

Donna, I have juvenile birds available if you don't want to wait for hatching eggs. Then you could start hatching your own babies in the Spring!

I was mainly talking about the people, that had photos of buff birds and said they were selling Lemon Cuckoos. I dont know whose auction is whose but there were some people that had all Barred birds, which is good, some with some barred and some buff saying they were pure Lemon Cuckoos, which is bad, and the one where it was solid buff birds being sold as lemon cuckoo, which is horrible.

Here is the auction I am mainly talking about.

Karen, the birds you have are the product of both Joy's and Julie's line, my hens are directly from Joy and my rooster is from Julie.

I have to agree that their lines mix well, I've got proof in the babies that are growing out this year, they get prettier and prettier every day!

Also, the English Orps are a bit looser feathered than their American cousins. You'll notice as they mature they have quite a bit of fluff, don't let all of the feathers fool you though- there will be substantial weight to your birds underneath all that fluff. My Black hen Thelma is easily pushing 10 pounds right now and like her dad Winston is as broad as a barn.

This is one of my favorite fluffy butt pictures.
