Jeremy here is tha boy you want chicks from . He is a stocky compact fellow. He wil be a year old in April His color is a bit dark but I have bred him over a lighter blue pullet and I am breeding him to splash pullets in the fall

I'm in love with him Julie! LOL. Should his base color be a bit lighter, is that what you mean by he's too dark? I think he's just about perfect!

Jeremy , yes I mean his ground color is a bit darker than I want. Matt H. always tells me not to lose my good ground color. I have a few chicks hatched from him and most look like boys so I will see how they turn out as I bred him to a lighter girl. That is large. I plan on putting him in with my blue hens in a week or so. They are just starting to lay. All are very large girls as is the blue pullet.
I am just getting back to taking care of the chickens a bit. The Dr. said today not to pick up over 10lb for another four weeks.
I like his shape and he has a decent comb and wattles . I will be interested to see how he looks in six more months. I will keep you all up on it.
Thank you all for the nice compliments on him.I need to name him . I haven't named one cockerel this year which is unusual for me. I may name him Charlie Jr,

The silver and gold gene dont effect the lacing but blacks from proper blues (with good lacing) will carry the lacing gene whereas blacks not from blue breedings wouldn't have that gene, which if bred to blues could cause poor coloring.

PPS - A black from BBS and a black from solid black stock are slightly different. The solid black stock has a "gold" gene to enhance the black and BBS would have "silver" instead. Therefore the black from the BBS is best for getting good lacing on blues though either can be used. Just thought I'd throw that in, it took me so long to find that out lol I wanted to pass it on.

Ok then, it's not the "gold" gene like I was told then? I forgot who told me but it was supposedly a good source. So, same breeding, just for a different reason than I was told. You see? It's so difficult to find out the why of some things. Thank you!!

I knew that some breeders recommended to use blacks from blue breedings for this, and was on a quest for a while to find out why. I posted the question a few times and the best answer I got then was the gold/silver gene thing. In fact that was the only sensible answer I got then. The reason I was burning to know, was that I had a really nice black roo from black lines and a splash roo from different lines. I have a couple of blue pullets and wanted to know which roo would be the best and why. Again, thank you!

If you can't pick up 10 lbs then you for sure can't pick up any in your flock! Wishing you a speedy recovery! He is a really nice boy.

I lost Astrid this morning. Last night she was not herself and when I check her I discovered that she was impacted and egg bound. There were five feathers stuck together across her vent that wouldn't let the egg pass. I cleaned her up last night and she passed the egg. I was sure she would be fine, but she was worse this morning. She passed while I was holding her, trying to figure out what else to do.

I am heartbroken. I'm sure she had to have been blocked for several days and I didn't notice.

I will never, ever, ever, ever say that one bird is my favorite ever again.

I am so sorry to hear that. Its never easy to lose one of them, and when its our favorites its the worst!!!

Oh no! There sure is a lot of hens dying lately. I had one pass in my arms Saturday evening and Roger had the same happen Sunday or Monday, though for different reasons.
