I'm excited to watch him grow, he's already a little chunker. It seems like these chicks get bigger and bigger everyday.

I haven't had any "regular" sized chicks in awhile, I visited a friend over the weekend who was hatching Easter Egger chicks... they were so tiny compared to my day old Orps! I asked him if they were bantams, he laughed and said, "No, they're just not the European turkey chickens you have at home. They're normal sized." 

By the way, I did get some easter egger chicks (long story - nevermind that) and thought they were WAY too little. Even my hatchery orps were bigger than that! I think...

I'm glad to see so much life in this thread again, keep it up everyone!

and lots of great information..so many people that are an asset to the breed..you all keep me from making mistakes like selecting for cull too soon, made that mistake once, wish someone would have said wait it out..boy was i sorry when i saw one i let go..

my question would be , humans have 23 chromosomes, chickens have something like 47? doesnt that kind of work in your favor if your inbreeding a little, especially if your line is robust? even in horses and dogs , pedigree parent is no guarentee of a kentucky derby winner either..thou it does help...ray connor 17 time national champion aussie breeder in australia freind said to him, give me your third worst, i will come back and beat you with them in 3 years...he did just that..maybe it was his knowlege of coaxing those genes out?

They weren't the easiest chicks to get pictures of, they're scared of anything that moves right now. LOL.

Cute chicks.. The momma is beautiful. I am not that familiar with Ameraucanas and standards there is to be an Ameraucana. So is the pretty momma a EE or an Ameraucana. She is just beautiful. :0)

I give him 2 or 3 weeks to start crowing. I have several like him. The pullets that I have from both Marc's bloodline and Greenfire's have very small combs and waddles. But, that's mine.

Does anyone know if this is a boy or a girl? I have 3 beautiful Chocolate Orpington girls that I got from Richard but, I don't have a boy. I am trying to find a boy for my girls. This person thought this chick was a boy but, I am thinking girl. It is 4 months old and not trying to crow yet. What do you think?

Sorry I put my quote on the wrong post and don't know how to delete. This is the original post. I got 3 girls from Richard and I am trying to find a roo Imported Chocolate Orpington for them. The owner of this bird in the pic that it was a boy but, I am thinking girl. I posted this once before but, I only got one guess. Does anyone else have an opinion.

Hens looks like red partridge but the roo comb looks more cochin than orp

It's clearly a wyndotte comb,and to me they look like a straight comb wyndotte.If you look at the base of the comb it preceeds the rear of the skull and has a wide base,They are very good in color and would be great if someone crossed them and got them to british standard,but 1000.00 for a pair is a little steep for me at the moment for project bird's...god knows i have enough going on right now,lol.
