The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I collected the first egg for my Partridge project today.

My big Splash boy Neville is penned with Prudence, a hen that is the result of an English Splash Orpington roo crossed with a Buff Orp hen.

I'm breeding this pair in hopes of coaxing out any hidden genes that might be in my English line, with the intention of replicating the breeding that produced Prudence. She is pretty distinctly marked and I'm crossing my fingers that her offspring have a even clearer marked Partridge pattern to their feathers.

I plan on collecting 4 eggs at a time and then setting them, I'll probably do this until I have at least a dozen eggs incubating.

Here's to wishing for Partridge marked babies in just a few weeks!

Hello Jeremy, just wanted to say "what a beautiful hen", I love seeing the different colors that come out. Good luck with your plans.

befor i go find the book this web site...britanic rare breeds way down on the chicken page gives the recipe they used in the varieties.a white dorkng cock was used with this and that.. ,. ...........did not know this either but the recipie for buffs was pretty close to that too...walt will very much like this page.

i could see so many differences between the group..now i kind of understand why..the blk recipe was so different than the rest...

It is interesting to see what was used. Dorkings and Langshans are really different body forms than Orps. I guess it worked though. I wonder what those first crosses looked like.

Pretty horrible, I'll bet! I have a cross I hope will work.....

MONTY'S FIRST CHICK HAS HATCHED !! BIG FAT CHICK. He was bred to my older girls. I'm kind of amazed that he's a dad at just 6 months and one week. A lot of Clevenger in those older girls, so this English Orp cross will be interesting. 5 out of 9 more pipped too a day early. Probably due to the heat.

the standard bred orpington says same for evolution of the white orpington..dorking ,hamburg, ect in the creation..Its interesting to know how this came about ..for those who are interested here is a page from standard bred orpington.. I always kind of scratched
my head wondering why the whites ,blacks and buffs looked different..now I understand.

early evolution of the blacks for comparison

champion buff hen 1910..she is beefy..I beleive she was a very early import.

I don't think the brittanicararebreeds page it is entirely accurate. It has a lot of "probably" in there including this one which is to me a head scratcher: "Blue: Probably created by crossing Black Orpington with White Orpington, resulting in Blue, Black and Splash offspring"

I had no idea it would be so easy to create Blues. Oh wait, it's not!
