Double glad you have that generator!
Me too ! I do have 2 broody Sun Conures though. Can you picture one trying to sit on an Orp egg??

Just got back. Glad to hear from some of you. Great news Aveca, DragonLady awesome to have a generator, Renie hope all is still well. Keep safe everyone.

On another note, does the full moon cause some chicks to hatch early? I remember Labor/Delivery was always buzzing around a full moon. Also, I'm thinking that raising chicks, in the South, during the Fall/Winter would grow bigger birds since they eat more and are less active. Have any of you Southerners noticed a difference between Fall chicks and Spring chicks in size? Just wondering since mine were a May hatch and were raised during the hottest time of the year.

Hi Dee,

Glad you're back. Fall / early winter chicks do have a tendency to grow larger as they eat more to stay warm. I have 6 and 7 week olds living outside now with no heat, and they are eating me out of house and home. They are really growing, and driving the big Orps nuts with their antics too. There are 12 of them, all EBO x SOP, and Buddy calls them "The Rat Pack". The 100% EBOs are some what more sedate, but they're 2-3 weeks younger.

I was told years ago to hatch Bantams in the warm weather, and Large Fowl in the cold weather. It's worked for me, but you have to be able to over winter the little ones.

No heat? I was just wondering if I should rig a heat lamp for my gang. How about their combs? Should I rub some balm on their exposed skin?...The boys kinda liked it

. Put some on them a while back when the gnats were biting them.

You could stuff 12 pillows with the feathers from your gang !! NO heat unless it goes below 20. Then just a 100 W. bulb will keep combs from freezing. The EBOs love this cooler weather. They're having a ball doing Mary Poppins numbers in the wind.
