Don't be surprised if she does not always lay in the box. My girls will make a nest out of bedding and lay there, they will lay in the nest box and, if it pleases them, they will just drop the egg on the ground anywhere and walk off leaving it. Khakis don't seem to be really interested in nesting. As I understand it other breeds do. I also have Cayugas which I hope to breed so I hope they have a nesting instinct.awesome! cool!!! I was really surprised. it was in the next box with the chicken eggsI really didn't expect her to lay in the box. at all.
My 4 girls do the same thing. They will lay in the nest box for awhile and then all of a sudden they decide to lay somewhere else and the hunt in on. So far I have Momma duck who went broody and successfully hatched out 11 eggs. I guess the nesting/broody instinct is strong in this line because 2 of her daughters are now broody also. One of the girls has taken over the big chicken nest box and the other has her nest in some bushes near the house.Don't be surprised if she does not always lay in the box. well, there was no egg in the box yesterday. I'll have to check today to see if one was laid elsewhere.![]()
Im a new duck mummy and think I have a K/C. Was told by store the yellow one is an alysbury but I dont think he/she is? Any ideas (maybe a kc)![]()
Khakis, at least mine, don't seem to mind one way or another. They will just lay an egg anywhere the mood suits them. My Blue Swedish however ruts out a nest in the bedding of their coop and lays her eggs there. I have 17 young Cayugas that will start laying in the next few weeks but don't know yet if they nest or not. Mine all seem to lay during the evening or early a.m. before they are let out for the day.yeah idk about khakis BUT muscovies tend to move their egg laying else where if we keep taking them away. So every few days of collecting, they will usually find somewhere else to lay lol
