The Legbar Thread!

Congrats! Eggs at 41/2 months would be great!

Carol
I found my first Cream Legbar egg today! And my flock is actually only 4 months and 16 days old. So I'm not sure why they are laying so early but I'm not going to complain! I have 3 girls and one roo. So I guess it's time to hatch out some more. The egg is a pale green.

It's the middle egg in between my two serama eggs and two rhode island red eggs. It's small but hopefully that will change.

Roncrna, congrats on you egg and so early, what a wonderful surpise!

Where did you get your stock/bloodline from?

Congrat roncrna! and at 4 1/2 months!!!

That's a cute little egg - They should get bigger. Thanks for posting it. I found a little egg like that in the nesting boxes yesterday and was puzzled by the size. The shape was consistent with my Legbar but boy was the size off...you've got me wondering if my younger girl is laying now. Will have to be on the look out for more. The shape of the egg I get stands out from my other breeds so it'll be great if it's consistent throughout my flock.

I've hatched out 3 pullets so far (and some roos) and have another 10 eggs in the bator now that my hen is laying again after a month off but not sure how much more my husband can take. I usually only do 4 - 6 eggs a week. I have a few males so I think I'll cragis list some pairs later this summer when I know which I want to keep. I have never shipped eggs but perhaps I'll give that a try soon...I'm thinking that I will try for 3 to 5 hens per pen with 1 (maybe 2 if I can keep a bachelor pad) rooster per pen. So far it'll just be the Legbars, Black Copper Marans and the Chocolate Orpingtons...unless I go for a fourth breed....can we say Jubilees!!!!!!!!!! What does everyone do for pens and the like. I'm thinking I might try a layers pen also but gotta warm my husband up a bit to my expansion ideas

I really should keep something more popular for around here as it is really more difficult to get rid of these rarer breeds or even get a decent price for anything...I just don't want Silkies, Plymouth Rocks or Rhode Island Reds. I want something more...'exotic' I guess and more than just a chicken that lays eggs...this is just how I feel about it and not that those breeds are any less exciting or novel for their owners so no offense meant to anyone out there so please don't take any...I just like having something a little different and that reminds me of growing up in the British Colonial Caribbean and Great Britain.

Think I'm going to put down my 3rd boy (he has a gorgeous crest) today - that tumor just won't go away and the side of his face really got bad this week and I've pumped him up with everything I could get my hands on. I think it's just wishful thinking on my part now that he will recover...not looking forward to it AT ALL.

Had put 3 boys and 1 female legbar out of the brooder to the outside grow out pen last week only to find that this cold wet weather had claimed 2 of the young boys yesterday. I have BCM's, Chocolate Orps and Legbars inside that will probably stay there this week since it's gonna rain until thursday. New England weather!!!!

In fact, they may stay in until I know for sure the weather is gonna stay warmer and dryer.

But to end on a good note hoping my own BCM eggs will hatch out next week - today is lockdown day for those and managed to rehome my alpha BCM and a Blue Copper hen this week.

Thanks for your update Blackbirds13-- so sorry about the boys that you lost and the one that you need to cull.

Send us some of your rain and I'll send you some of our heat...my coop/runs are already 100-degrees. Do you think cold temperatures claimed the Legbars that went from brooder to grow pen? How cold - for future reference for some of us..... After all that work to loose some...is rough.

Hope that the worst of it is behind you and all the rest of all your hatches will go well.

We need some heat here too. I got my Legbar pair outside in their pen for the first time & it's been cold & rainy. Here's a pic of them with their good friend, a crested SFH. It was windy & chilly & they are all puffed up on the perch. They also have 2 BCM hens and a RR hen for company & warmth. It's been in the 40s at night, and upper 50s and lower 60s during the day.

Here's a new batch of Cream Legbars hatched from TX Ebay eggs- 6 girls & 2 boys! They are a few weeks old & I see that the 2 boys are feathering in a little bit differently, one is a spotty white & blackish & the other one is more brown.

WOW, I LOVE your pictures! If only that top one the rooster didn't have how the camera light reflects to make his eye look redder than normal. I see that as a 'calendar picture'. The colors are really rich and the Legbars are really colorful. Thanks for posting---the babies too. NIce healthy looking chicks -- 6 girls. Lucky you!

Beautiful babies!!! It's amazing to see the different range in color in both the hens and the roosters.

I just posted my first ever White Legbar auction.
