The Legbar Thread!

JMO - This is one reason I am not a fan of the white sports - It defeats the auto-sexing nature. Also I free range my guys a bit so that's really not a great color out there in the fields when we have a good amount of hawks, coyotes and fisher cats. Plus...I have to admit while I can appreciate a beautiful white chicken I just don't care for the color in my chickens, and I don't care for how dingy or dirty it looks and gets. I got the legbars partially because I think the color is very attractive.

Still no whites here and I hope to keep it so.

I think I may line-breed my fbirds if nothing shows up just to try to ensure I don't have them pop up in my flock, but since my husband may limit me to 3 roosters and I want to keep 3 breeds I may have occasion to add a rooster unless I keep a few juvies through the winter....did not think about that until typing it at this moment. Has anyone figured out what pen A (1), B (2) or C (3) they may be coming out of? When Jenny emailed me about my birds she used letter terms but I know some use numbers. Just curious if there has been any correlation of white offspring to birds from a certain pen.

I know some of you love them so no offense is meant in ANY WAY by what I am saying as I feel you should breed what you want to breed. I am no fan of the "your bird has "blank" so you should not breed it' because of SOP or what ever reason though I understand why some say so. They are essentially only chickens and I would like to keep my flock the way I choose to. I am just hoping to avoid the whites. - JMO

I agree. I'm not a fan of any solid colored chicken and white is the worst. I already have way too many white based SFHs (freezer camp is calling). That may be terrific on snow in Sweden but in green, brown, and gray western WA - not so much. It's way too easy for a bald eagle to pick off. Part of the charm to me of the Legbars is the coloring. The boys are gorgeous and my girls so pretty and all look a bit different. I got chicks from all three lines from GF and I totally liked how easy it was to tell the boys from the girls immediately. My Legbars also have nice temperaments. They aren't quite as friendly as the SFHs but way better than the shy little Isbars.

I understand some of them don't lay blue eggs. They can lay green or even olive. I probably will only keep the blue egg layers in the breeding flock. Hope I get some.

Mine are 18 weeks today. The boys are mature and I've got big fat combs and wattles on some of the girls already. Time to switch to layer food, I think. They seem very happy in our nice cool NW weather.

Are you sure green is for the 3rd line? My original birds are banded green and they came from the original line. Also, I thought they only had 3 lines but they are importing a 4th line this year that will be available next year.

Mine came banded red, blue and yellow in March of this year.

I received this e-mail from GF in March:

Red, yellow and blue signify a, b, and c.

Red line is first line – floppier combs, blue line is the one with erect combs and less chestnut, yellow line is the production line.

Best,
Jenny

I have no idea what the actual colors represent as far as the lines go. I was just saying that as an example or for instance. Sorry for the confusion

anniesmom---

Love your cream Legbar pictures. The little guy with the legband that has 16 visible on it--- looks like he may feather in to a very light barring. Very pretty guy.

Thank you! I do really need to get new pictures. They have grown up so much since the last ones. If the sun comes out today, I'll go do that.

And no you weren't wrong about the blue legbands. You can see in the pictures that I got some and the e-mail from Jenny confirms it. They must be switching band colors occasionally.

No biggie. I'm not sure how accurate GFF info is either. Green is what my original guys were banded with last October. But then this year they have completely different colors and green isn't one of them.

For what it's worth, my boys were banded blue. Girls were red. They came March 1. 3 of 4 boys perfect to near perfect upright combs! Feel like the boys are from a newer line or maybe they're young still and haven't started flopping. Photo is from early June.

My broody Seramas just hatched out my first two new Cream Legbars as a test run before I hatch out more. They are both roos unfortunately but hopefully they will have a prettier less floppy comb unlike their dad. And they also hatched out a Serama/Cream Legbar cross. Didn't think this would happen being that the Seramas I have are quite small and the CL roo is rather big. Guess you can cross about anything. And for all you cross breeding haters, I didn't let them hatch it out to sell or to try to create a new breed to pass off on ebay.
