The Legbar Thread!

interesting -- with a tail and a crest. I vote for the Araucanas with tails. :O)

Why? Then go for an Ameraucana and add a crest. I love the uniqueness and challenge of breeding my rumpless/tufted Araucanas. The native birds from which they were developed are rumpless. The natives believed them to be better able to avoid predation.

Just another example of the standards not having to be the same on both sides of the pond.

I fully intend to keep my white and breed them, although as a separate line from my standard colored legbars. If I end up not liking them, I can always place the girls in my egg flock for their lovely blue eggs.

Those are good insights Deb. I also think that everyone should keep chickens for their own particular wishes, wants, needs and taste. -- So one chicken owner's path will be different from another's. Thanks.

ETA--- I let my rooster run with all my hens....and among the hens...my Easter Egger is really a performer. She outlays the Legbar hybrid (according to today's Eggzy.net stats.)--- I wonder what the result of her eggs would be with my rooster. Easter Eggers with a crest...and barring?? EE's like no others that would lay a lot of eggs.

I put some eggs in the bator today - we'll see if they develop. I put eggs in from both females - golden hackle and cream hackle - and my creamier Alpha male. The younger female's eggs are definitely smaller - they got a bit larger but the comparison in size difference is still evident.
Decided to go for color and crest first and the comb second. The comb issue though serious it is still just a fault but the color is what makes it a cream legbar so that's what I'm going to try for....and see what I have come next spring.

Junior is still in isolation as I am not sure what I will do with him as he is too colorful. for what I am planning. I may hold on to him until the fall and try him with the cream girl and see..as he is a nice looking boy.

My husband's gonna definitely insist I decrease my numbers....for sure.

Very pretty little trio! Did you hatch these? What good luck on the ratio!
I ordered the eggs from two breeders: one excellent (hi Candace!) who is very professional and wonderful to deal with, and you all know her on this thread; and one source on eBay whom I don't think is here on BYC. I had a local breeder incubate them for me as I don't have an incubator (yet . . .) or a broody hen (yet) or quite frankly enough experience (yet).

X2 - they really look good. How interesting the color variation. Please keep us posted with pictures as they grow. Thanks!
I will definitely be sharing their pictures. I am hoping for and counting on your feedback. :)
Speaking of which . . . is the color variation between the two girls unusual in CLs? TIA.

normanack you just made my day!

Hello;

I am very excited about cream leg bars. I ordered a male and 2 females - one of the females from GFF didn't make it. (IDK why but stuff happens and GFF was great about it) They are growing beautifully. My male just started crowing and he has some nice color and is so far very curious. I think he likes freeze dried worms. My female is a beauty too. I would have loved to have had 2 females. I can wait and order another later. My male has a little red but not much. I will post some photos. My female is really small. (May 9th hatch) I was wondering if any of you have petite birds. My male is a little bigger. I have not had an egg yet but I think maybe September or October. My female is also very curious and follows me around the chicken run. They both have very pretty fluffs of feathers behind their heads. I am very pleased.

I have a petite. She roosts every night in the rafters of the chicken barn along with my light body type Cream Legbar Cockerel. None of my other chicken roost in the rafters including a heavy bodied Cream Legbar hen that is penned with the petite.

At dusk when I go out to close the doors to the chicken coops I often see the heavy bodied hen trying to get up to the rafters to join her sister, but she can never get higher than about 5 feet off the ground.

I have two larger near identical pullets and one that it smaller, more petite but has a larger crest. The size difference is pretty significant. All are from the same hatch and have the same treatment. I think it's just part of the genetic diversity.
