The Legbar Thread!

Question for you guys. I got a breeding pair of Legbars were imported from Greenfire. The hen just went through a molt and was off laying when I got her. She laid a beautiful robin's blue egg the next day much to my suprise and another blue egg a few days later. Since then she's laid a more muted blue/green egg. Do you think the restarting of her laying has gotten the color off a bit?

Here are the eggs for comparison

Second egg she produced: The nice blue!

Now her eggs are looking like this

wow that first one is spectacular!

Yep sure do. Of my three hens that I was breeding last summer one had a green hint to her first eggs that faded after 2-3 weeks. I also had some Gold Legbar before I got the Cram Legbars and their eggs stared out at a rich cream color the first 2-3 weeks and then faded to were I couldn't tell them appart from the white Leghorn eggs. Anyways...the Cream Legbar that laid the green hint eggs produced blue eggs all summer and fall, but after her molt I got a few very green eggs before the brown ink went dry resulting again in blue egg colors. So...if the hen has the genes for the brown pigment it is going to be strongest at the beginning of a laying cycle. I think that is what you are seeing.

Baby boy number 1, out day 20 in less than an hour pip to hatch! I think I'll name him London...first in the Fog line. My picture isn't clear, but he is going to be so light when he dries, grey body and cream dot on his head.

Bella thinks she knows Everything, and wants everything to run on a schedule - hers. She has that superpower ESP stare that herding dogs can have. And requires 30 minutes a day of dedicated toy chasing, not letting anything like furniture, cats or other solid objects slow her down. But she is very friendly and social, and pays absolutely no attention to the chickens, rabbits, squirrels, or any other animal except one (but only that one) of the neighbor dogs who is NOT allowed in our yard for some reason. Truly a great dog. Oh - she is also deaf.

Herself with the flock:

Love your dog with the flock!! Beautiful heeler! Yes ours also understand English -- but fortunately their spelling isn't the best so we can almost keep secrets from them.

Yay! So glad! How many made it through the incubation process??? I know it's out of my hands once they are shipped but I still feel anxious that you have a good hatch! He does look nice and light!

This his hen. I also have two black Australorp hens that were in the fire. What do you guy's think of them. Give me your honest opinion of them.

How old are they? Looks like the rooster at least is pretty young? His chest needs to fill out more to make a "curve" in the front it's pretty straight sloped right now, but if he's young it will fill in. So will his tail. Tail angle is good. Comb is nice and straight. Small crest- check. Nice earlobes and nice, even round wattles. I'm not sure but his legs have black on them? That may be mud or dirt. They should be nice and yellow when clean. His biggest fault is his color, his saddle is VERY Chestnut. His hackles have some chestnut in them too. If you can get ahold of some cream females to breed with him you can start getting a nice cream based flock.

The news on your female is not as good. But the picture quality is poor, and judging from pictures is always dependent upon things I can't determine, like if a chicken was spooked at the time the photo was taken. First, shape- she's not as well rounded in the front as I'd like to see, but just as I mentioned about the rooster that may be due to age and lack of maturity. Her tail angle is much too high. And last she is definitely not cream based. I'm not sure if you followed the earlier discussion about the cream gene, but birds with only one cream gene will look gold. So I don't know if she has one cream gene or none, that's something you would have to test mate for and then grow out the offspring to find out. She does seem to have a nice crest. Other than that I can't tell from this picture. Feel free to post a better one if you can get one.
