The Legbar Thread!

I have never heard of a splash Legbar either, and would like to know where they came from and what the adults look like

P.S. Yes, I am familiar with the Brown Marans. When I first saw them I was guessing that they had a diluter of black like the chocolate gene. Several people in California were looking from Black Marans for their Chocolate Marans project last year so I assumed that one of the Marans lines was throwing the chocolate gene. In later discussion I heard several people bash the Hayden Browns both for naming them after them self (you don't name chickens after yourself. The APA has only allowed that once in the case of the Lamona, but Harry Lamona was an APA judge and spent 2 decades developing that breed so they felt it was fitting, naming something that after yourself that you don't even have stabilized in your flock or a true breeding line is not going to fly with APA, and so the Marans Breeders are reasonable up-set over what Mr. Veech is doing. The other complaint about the Haden Browns if that several people have said that they have culls that look just line them. The blue copper Marans pair in the post you refer to is a good example. They simple have the black melonizers and the copper coloring miss paired producing too much copper. If you look at the shanks you will see that the feathering is not brown. In the Hayden Browns they have brown feathers all the way to their feet. They also have a distinct down type. So I think that the claims that the Hayden Browns are culls has no merit to it and people that get sick over everyone jumping on every new color rather than wanting good quality Marans and lashing out in their frustration.

Aloha e Gary,

Sorry, I was just joking. I'm sure it's just a mutation. I'm sure the breeder is trying to breed the white out of her line. I was just making a joke about my bad luck. To top it off, the only normal female died of pasty butt.

Should I breed him with the sport and start a new line - The Puhi Splash Cream Legbar!

haha, Puhi

Okay, I thought you were excited about all the variety you had of Cream Legbars. :)

Well, I think it would be better to breed to a sport than to out cross to another breed. :)

Aloha,

You don't think I should cull that one? #3 looks pretty good so far huh? Is #5 a boy?

Thanks, Puhi
My guess would be pullet on #5. Of course I am always end up with Marans Cockerels with girly names.

I am going to have to look more into feather sexing. I thought it only worked as a sex-link when you crossed faster feathering breeds with slow feathers breeds. If it can be accomplished in a pure line I will have to work on that. :)

I think it's just something you have to try and see if it works with your line of a particular breed- feather sex some and mark them and see how they grow out. My Ameraucanas I cannot feather sex at all- even had a pro come take a look at my chicks and told me the whole batch were boys (which turned out to be false). The next time I have a batch of Cream Legbar X Leghorns though I want to take a look at the feathering because I would think I might have a good shot at feather-sexing them.

Thought some Cream Legbar crosses might provide insights into their color genetics. Well, really I just wanted a reason to share them as they're so pretty.
Other than the Cream Legbar rooster, the only other dads are a black and a white Silkie. So I'm fairly sure these are all the CL rooster's babies.

I think this is CL x part Dark Cornish.

Possible mom of pullet above.

Another "I'm not quite sure" cross. I'm thinking CL x Coronation Sussex, as this guy is huge (like the Sussex).

Check out his glorious Legbar tail.

More in a bit if that's okay. Your thoughts welcome!
