Hi, Id like some input on buying a flock of legbars from a lady getting out of the business they are green fire line. I have no clue about these birds and if I would be at loss if presuing them.... are they a popular breed? I have no clue how much people sell eggs, chicks to adults for. she said she does well saleing them on ebay. and sells a day old chick for 20.00. that just sounds like alot to me. what is your thoughts? Thank you

WelcomeX2 :)

It all depends on whether you like them, as to their value that is :D I love them. And the autosexing and blue eggs sold me on the breed. If the parents are quality stock, then $20 a pullet chick is a bargain. For comparison, I paid $45 a pullet and $15-25 a cockerel my first year. I then spent another 6.50 to $10 an egg on hatching eggs last year. There are more birds and eggs available now, most pet quality, but show quality double cream proven blue eggs layers are still worth a lot!

I am excited and wanted to share photos of my recent Cream Legbar chicks. I do have a question. What do those black Legbar males look like when they mature? They are really dark!!

The breeding stock is all Greenfire Farms stock. One hen and the rooster are from eggs I hatched directly from Greenfire Farms last year. I also purchased eggs and their stock was also directly from Greenfire farms.

I would love input on what you think the different colors of chicks might mean. I think maybe there are some creams. I may also be wrong since I consider myself a Greenhorn when it comes to this breed.

I also am the one with the really light colored Rooster. I will also post his picture as a reference. Someone said he may carry the cream gene. So maybe I do have a cream chick in the hatch.

Super excited in Sunny Kansas. Thanks for letting me SHARE!!

Congrats on all your chicks Soldier :D Something seems off with those dark guys and extremely fluffy red ones though, shape and color wise...they don't look like Legbar chicks at all. But perhaps it's just lighting too. It will be interesting to see how they grow. I would mark the ones with no or little red, and grays and tan downs to watch as they grow. With your rooster you have either some creams or cream carriers in there :) Best wishes!

X2 the black chicks with the yellow dot are not Cream Legbars to my eye. Are there any other possible dads?

X3. You are lucky to have so many cute little fuzzy butts but some of them do look a bit off in regards to down color and type. Are your females cream or gold or do you have a mix? The black ones are unfortunately the least like a legbar chick and some of the females seem to have a body type that is a bit different than what I am used to seeing and there's a lot of orange hues also. I agree with KPenley in going through and notating which ones look closer to the standard type for the breed and seeing what happens going forward and you should at least have come cream carriers if not full cream depending on the hens. Congrats. I think we are all greenhorns when it comes to this breed so much to still learn and discover.
