I would say both the Marans and Cemani need a lot of work. The bad part I see about the Cemani is the small amount of eggs they lay a year. I see them more a novelty and that's it. You can't do much with just 60 eggs a year.

It's only the Greenfire line that lay 60 eggs per year. My line which is based upon Toni-Marie Astin blew through that number by March 1st. They only just stopped because they went broody and I didn't catch it quick enough. If I had not let them go broody, they would have matched the laying capability of my Cream Legbars. Any my latest generation will be laying in the next week or so. So I should be getting 2 dozen per day. My Legbars are going to need to start laying twice a day to keep up.

Today I did my best to take a few pics of my six 9week old CL cockerals. I don't have them banded so it was hard to keep track of who I took pics of lol but I tried my best.

Nice batch of chickens -- Love your Alpenzeller Spitz....so that's what juveniles look like huh? :O) wonderful birds.

My favorite from your display is definitely male 1....Not sure if I counted correctly but he also seems to have the correct number of points for comb...and his crest looks to be coming in even on both sides...and is his comb also straight? Nice babies...and of course the littlest one--what a cutie..

Yes those are juvenile Appenzeller Spitzhauben they are also 9weeks old and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!! I hatched 2 males and 4 females.They are my first, I hatched them from eggs I bought from a local breeder.

And I am with you, Male 1 is my favorite also. I like his coloring the best, he does have a pretty straight comb so far no twist with only a very slight wave in the front and he has a small neat crest(and yes I believe it is even on both sides. I hope he matures nicely.

I also really like the 3 week old but he is so young I have a ways before I can really judge him.

@chicken pickin male #1 is great looking. We would appreciate if you start recording your Legbar weights on the Cream Legbar Club's website. @ChicKat can send you the link. We are trying to pool our records to see what the average growth weights for this breed should be at different stages.

@ChicKat mentioned that male Legbar chicks are very protective of their girls from a very young age. I noticed that mine start protecting the girls at 2.5 weeks. First there were just gentle pecks on my fingers when I tried to reach and get the girls in the brooder, but now he is getting pretty aggressive towards me (only when I put my hand in the brooder). He is 4 weeks old today and I put them in with 6 week old Brahmas, I don't expect him to fare that well against the big guys but I think he can help the girls survive the severe beating thats expected tomorrow.

I like #1, #2, and #7.

To make it an even four you might hold on to who ever had the best size/shape/type too.

I say 4 because it seem that inevitably one will be taken by a predator, one will die with no forewarning or explanation, one will be infertile, and that will leave you one left to work with.

Thank You! I plan to grow them out for a while before I make any decisions. I posted the males in order of who I feel I like the best (not including #7 but I have a good feeling about him also).

I don't have room for too many roosters so it will boil down to keeping one of these boys as my new main breeder and if I can I may keep one as a back up.
