The Legbar Thread!

I have a question. I have one too with more brass but comb is good. Then I have two with off set combs and great color. Each one is 14 weeks old a d weights 4.5 lbs. Which one is better to keep?
Hi how're you doing up there? Ice melted yet?

Generally the advice is 'build the barn, then paint it' -- you may want to have the more structurally correct one pass his genetics forward. JMO

I now have a trio of CCL thanks to Tripell . About 14 weeks old . Shipped eggs got me zero . I knew the risk on shipped eggs but usually get a couple .
Glad to know someone else in Illinois has CCLs. Please post pictures when you can. I have a trio thats 10 weeks old and 2 pullets that are 3 weeks. I will post their pictures in a couple of days.
Also if you would be kind enough to share your data on weight with us, we would really appreciate it. @ChicKat is maintaining it in a spreadsheet and can send you a link if you are interested.

At what age one should cull for bad comb? Both my pullets (10 weeks old), haven't grown a comb yet, but I can see that it is not straight. Is there are possibility it may fix itself as they grow?

Why cull them? Sell them to someone who can use them for eating eggs. I'm sure they will make great pets.

It's okay for pullets to have floppy or wiggly combs (S-shaped). Double standard?? They may be just fine in your flock! I think if you go to the CL Club's web page, you will see in that photo gallery, a variety of combs on females. Even "Lillian" on the first web page has a non-straight comb if memory serves. Infact, since females have more crest & less tuft, it is almost inevitable.

To answer your question in one way, replace that pullet when you have a better one to put in your line up. My Easter chicks are about 1-week older than your 10-weekers then right?? I can see that their combs will have wiggles too.

Speaking of Website photo gallery,..it woulld be nice IMO to see some new picts added in that photo gallery, anyone agree?

There is a weight tracking page on the website, You can enter at any stage of the chick's development, up to three years, I think. Once you put your first entry in, I send you access to the spreadsheet. If I don't, then PM me to get it. Thanks.

By strict definition "cull" means to remove from a breeding program, it is not synonymous with kill. Culls can be sold as egg layers, or even to another breeder. Just because a cull doesn't fit your breeding program doesn't mean it won't be a good start for someone else- depending on the flaws of course.

I agree! E-mail your pictures to [email protected] if you would like to add them to the gallery.

So glad I found this thread! We bought 14 pairs from an auction. This is our first experience with CLB. We were told they were were from the "c" line or 3rd import. They are 12 weeks old. I am very excited about them. Most of my pullets look great and will be used for breeding. Now just waiting to see which roos I will be keeping out of the 7. I really want to help improve the breed and hope my flock will be worthy of doing so. :)

As @lonnyandrinda said, by cull I meant just remove from the breeding program. Of course I will enjoy their blue eggs since I don't have any other blue egg layers. Since I Iive in Chicago, I don't have the capacity to hatch a lot, so I have to be very strict about what I breed if any. And yes @ChicKat mine are 3-4 days younger than yours, however mine have fallen a little behind yours in terms of weight. I think it might be due to changes in their coop as well as feed. Also doesn't help that they get beaten up by the broody and 2 adult hens all day long. I will post pictures once they 11 weeks on Thursday.

BTW, I plan on keeping my CL cockerel in the same coop as a , Red Star, RIR and Australorp hen. It will be nice to see what kind of chicks hatch and whether I can get any Olive eggers especially from the Red Star cross hatchings.
