The Legbar Thread!

Hey everyone, I'm considering adding a legbar to our flock next Spring, and I'm curious about their temperament. All my breeds are chosen for docility, so I want to make sure I'm not inviting a bully into the house.

Any notes you have on their personalities are appreciated.

Cream Legbar hens are very sweet, to people and flock mates. They have enough grit that they are not the low chicken in the pecking order, but they do not go around looking for trouble.

However, my roosters are sneaky little snots that just watch for a chance to get me. I butchered one of them today. Can't wait for revenge!

Ha ha! Good to know. :p

One of my 12 weeks old Legbar Phyllis has red around her eye area. Eyes are perfectly normal, her weight was normal last week. Only thing different about her is that she is singing the egg song which is too early for her age. No comb or wattles though. I tried to take her picture but she is very fast (I can only weigh her at night when she is sleeping). So here is a picture from one of the forums that is similar to what she looks like:

Junibutt-- she could be precocious....
She could be just practicing her song - and still be a few weeks away.

BTW - my pullets that are about the age of some of yours are "playing house" and grousing around their run and squawking a lot -- but I still think that they will come in at about 24 weeks like the norm seems for CLs. Someplace or other on these forums, I think I saw someone say that their CL started laying at 16-weeks. Keep an eye on Phyllis and let us know when the big day arrives and how old she is.

I am more worried about some type of skin irritation or disease. Her squawking is not bothering me, I love when they do that. And yes, my elder Legbar Hope used to squawk a lot around the same age but then slowed down and only now I see her comb growing. (at 20 weeks)

Is she a hybrid ? She appears to be blue in color and is that a beard . A beard and pea comb will suppress wattles and a pea comb on a hen is small .
