The Legbar Thread!

There are some judges that appreciate a good patterened bird. My phoenix bantam hens look amazing, their silhouette compared to the standard is spot on but they always get passed over for the leghorn bantams at shows. I had a judge place one of my phoenix as reserve of show, she told me she finds the solid birds boring and knows the skill it takes to breed a bird with good type AND pattern.
I think legbars are still up in the air as far as show age goes. My pullets look better than my hens but the roosters look better after they are a year old.
Thanks for pointing that out. David Scrivener says that also - if a judge knows what it takes to get good specimen of certain breeds and the good specimens can be considered "living works of art because of the expertise necessary to produce good specimens". His original statement was in answer to the question: Do some breeds win more major awards than others?

Hi all, I would really like to get some hatching eggs, and would love to pick up in person to avoid shipping problems. Does anyone in Denver or the front range have them or have hatching eggs? Thanks!

Today I took some photos of my Cream Legbar 2014 editions. They are of different hatches so size may vary. I would love evaluations and welcome both GOOD AND BAD. Thanks for looking.

I somehow got a couple or so RED Legbars. Below are photos of one of them; VERY DIFFERENT!

Some of the Cream Legbars together, 2013/14 models pictured with other breeds too. Please disregard muddy pen. Poor time of year for photos!

THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE.

I love the obvious crests, long backs, full breast, full bodies, yellow legs, defined salmon breast (at least in the top pic left pullet), and defined barring crest to tail in your 2014 pullets soldier! Some look to have some pretty wide tail feathers coming in too. The red one has a pretty good shape, but may be lacking a copy or two of cream ( since red is showing up in areas it should be inhibited), and that is a lot of autosomal red to get rid of down the line. Please let us know how they finish growing out!

Hi Soldier, I would love to see any chick pictures you may have of the extreemly barred females - and the parent pictures too. I'm wondering if the very-barred females had some similarity to barred-rock chicks - or if their head spots were somewhat different. Thanks for posting all the pictures.

Happy New Year everyone -- say bye-bye to 2014 and welcome 2015 --

Oh my, I didn't know CCL hatching eggs were so expensive. Does anyone know where I could get some that don't cost an arm and a leg?
. I have a "shopping motto" when it comes to all my stock, be it horses, cattle OR chickens: "it doesn't cost any more to feed a good one than a mutt"!!! Since CLB's are auto sexing, it might be cheaper in the long run to buy the best trio of day-old chicks you can afford (get 1 roo and 2 girls), then breed your own. You can then sell your own eggs/chicks and recoup your investment! (Although this is what I originally told my husband, too, and I'm still in the red! Lol). Good Luck!

I don't know where I would find day old chicks. I don't think anyone has any locally (I couldn't find them searching Craig's List), but if I did find them, I don't have transportation to go get them.

Thanks for those who commented on the birds. I love comments both good and bad because it really helps in breeding programs.

ChicKat,

No, I do not have photos of these pullets as chicks, but I do have photos of the parents. I acquired two of the parents directly from Greenfire Farms last year as hatching eggs that I won in a Backyard chicken contest. I hatched one pullet and my only rooster which is the sire to the 2014 pullets I posted. The eggs I won were from two different GFF strains. My rooster is a bit different but is directly from Greenfire Farms stock.

I then purchased some eggs from a Backyard chicken member who purchased her eggs directly from Greenfire Farms, her line came from two different GFF strains. I hatched out all pullets from the eggs, about 8 all together. I was lucky.

Attached are photos of parents of 2014 pullets - The rooster in the photos is pictured as an immature rooster. Feathers not all the way grown out yet
