When should roosters start crowing? My legbar rooster was hatched last spring (I bought him 2 weeks ago) and just noticed he finally tried crowing yesterday like twice when I first let them out, and it sounded AWFUL. he sounded like one of those poor roosters with a crow collar on:/. Could he just be finding his voice?

Cream Legbar cockerels start to crow (and mate) early. Listen to his breathing and smell his breath to check for a respiratory infection. Mine lost his crow and a shot of penicillin brought it back.

Thanks, I will keep an eye on him then. My daughter was holding him this afternoon and was giving a good look over. He seems fine, I didn't see this beforehand so I didn't try to smell his breath.

What does their breath smell like when they have a respiratory infection?

I have to admit that with mine I couldn't smell anything (maybe it was just a cold?) but from what others have told me it just stinks. I guess it's sort of like when my hen got sour crop. I didn't know what it was supposed to smell like but when I took a whiff I sure knew what I was smelling!

The post about the heavy breathing and bad breath scared me for a moment. Last week I had to doctor a young rooster, I think he had the very beginnings of bumblefoot. I had him wrapped in a towel and was working on his foot and he was breathing very heavy (I don't think it was because he liked me

). Anyway I noticed the heavy breathing. I checked him today.... no heavy breathing and no bad breath.

I do know what you mean about knowing it when you smell it.....that is why I like this forum so much. It may not be a problem for me now but somewhere down the road the information is going to come in real handy when I need it most.

Thanks to all who post with all their experience and knowledge!

Thanks for the input. I guess common sense prevails - if it smells wrong, something's wrong. And a wrong smell is something that doesn't smell like earth, feed, healthy preening, etc.

Kind of like when I was raising puppies - the lovely smell of a newly nursed pup vs. a pup nursing off of a dam who was having a milk infection. BIG difference!

I remember that smell. I loved the puppies.... not the infection part but the sweet puppies!
