Yes, the white chicks are still auto sex. It's a little harder but can still be done. I love the little white chicks. I have saved a breeding pair. I'm going to breed them together to see what I get. I'm hoping they still lay blue eggs..

Maybe one of the genetics folks could give a little tutorial on chick down color,pictures included would be so helpful. I would like to id chicks right from the beginning, and would prefer to keep only males that have the appropriate markings

Yes, White Legbars are autosexing like the other color varieties (Gold, Silver, and Cream), crested, and lay blue eggs.

If you do a search for chicks you will see lots of info and discussion about chick colors, but honestly...until you grow out your birds you're not going to know what they'll look like.
Cream Legbar chicks are wildtype e+, so they should look something like this:


Boys with a correct double dose of barring should be diluted in color, and have a white/light head spot. They should not be as dark or have as clearly defined stripes as the girls. In general, it looks like the grey/silver cockerals are growing up the closest to the correct coloring. Avoid breeding dark boys.


Girls should be darker with clearly defined black and brown "chipmunk" stripes running head to tail, and dark eyeliner. Some of the girls will have a small light spot on their heads, as do Silver Legbars. Although this is mentioned in the UK SOP, I think it would be wise of us to eventually breed this trait out so that the autosexing function won't be so confusing. Avoid breeding diluted girls or girls with large light head spots.

My babies are a month old, but you can still see the color difference between the cockeral and pullets.

It has been determined that the first ever quarterly meeting of the Cream Legbar Club will take place online on Saturday, February 2, at 7 AM PST, 8 AM MST, 9 AM CST, 10 AM EST. I know a few of you don't care about my rose combed legbar project but some do so figured I'd post an update. My girls all turned 6 months old yesterday and I got an egg out of them. It is a nice clean blue color compared to the green eggs my line C hen lays. My line C hen also didn't lay until well after 8 months old so this is a big improvement. As soon as the snow melts some, all of the pullets will go in with a legbar rooster and produce all rose combed legbar chicks with better egg color and much better cold hardiness (the rose combed ladies are kept in an outdoor coop with protection from wind but nothing else, we've been getting below 0 at nights too) so it looks like my own personal legbar project is well on its way.

Congrats!!!! Sounds like a great project. Are the offspring going to be auto-sexing?
