The Legbar Thread!

Figure I'd chime in again. About the whole different breed thing- If we go forward with the cream legbar standard as far as type goes, we can call the colored birds gold if we want since it would be a variety of the breed. Look at the UK marans with clean legs, the country of origin requires feathered legs but they breed them with clean legs. Us having a gold legbar with a crest would be the same thing in a way if that makes any sense to anyone else. I personally prefer the term light brown legbar because they are light brown birds with barring. When I hear the term 'gold', I picture a golden duckwing bird.
I figure if we can all somewhat agree on type, that is all that matters; the color can come later. I will always prefer the colored birds. Sure, I will have cream pop up from time to time and I might end up with a breeding pen of them, but for now, I prefer the colored birds. I have a good grasp of genetics so if something does happen to my flocks, I can remake them from scratch if needed. I still plan to have 3 strains that will produce cream and light brown legbars. I will have the production line, the rose comb line, and the show line. To me with the way my mind works, these will all be different looking. The production birds won't have the best type and to be honest, I might let the tails go towards pinched since they will be just for layers to sell locally. The rose comb line will meet the standard but be more thrifty. The show line, I envision having a gorgeous leghorn tail, a full breast, good crest (not too big or small), good leg color, and striking plumage. Right now, I have the pure and rose comb birds with the rose comb birds being more production selected.

There will be pics soon! We went through all the legbars, LF sumatras, bantam sumatras, and marans today so pretty worn out. The culls far out number the keepers, lol.

I had originally planned to keep 6 pullets of each comb type but since the rose comb variety still needs work, I am more hard on them. For cockerels, I have 1 of each comb type with small crest and the other have larger crests just so I can match them up accordingly.
One of the nice things about the legbar cockerels is that they are (mine anyway) pretty hefty. I figure with the culls, I can sell the pelts for fly tiers and we'll can the meat.

I would say the lack of genetic understanding and the whole "If Life gives you Lemons, do Lemonade" is playing its part here, I dont detect any malice on their thoughts or desires... I mean if I was given a CCL and I was not Previously aware of the whole Cream vs Silver debate and I got some GFF birds and I fall in love with them an then someone that has studied this fact for a longer time comes and say that my birds don’t meet the SOP, I would be disheartened and maybe not so happy about it and would look at my birds and say, they look nice I like their cream color….
