Figure I'd chime in again. About the whole different breed thing- If we go forward with the cream legbar standard as far as type goes, we can call the colored birds gold if we want since it would be a variety of the breed. Look at the UK marans with clean legs, the country of origin requires feathered legs but they breed them with clean legs. Us having a gold legbar with a crest would be the same thing in a way if that makes any sense to anyone else. I personally prefer the term light brown legbar because they are light brown birds with barring. When I hear the term 'gold', I picture a golden duckwing bird.
I figure if we can all somewhat agree on type, that is all that matters; the color can come later. I will always prefer the colored birds. Sure, I will have cream pop up from time to time and I might end up with a breeding pen of them, but for now, I prefer the colored birds. I have a good grasp of genetics so if something does happen to my flocks, I can remake them from scratch if needed. I still plan to have 3 strains that will produce cream and light brown legbars. I will have the production line, the rose comb line, and the show line. To me with the way my mind works, these will all be different looking. The production birds won't have the best type and to be honest, I might let the tails go towards pinched since they will be just for layers to sell locally. The rose comb line will meet the standard but be more thrifty. The show line, I envision having a gorgeous leghorn tail, a full breast, good crest (not too big or small), good leg color, and striking plumage. Right now, I have the pure and rose comb birds with the rose comb birds being more production selected.
