The Legbar Thread!

You are right about the banding in the first chicks... R. -- Remember when we used to talk bands? Then lines A B C etc? I know I got a yellow banded male and a green banded female...

Perhaps since there were so few at the start it made sense, and subsequently it didn't. For those that got/had banded birds - you can know which line they came from. Maybe the customer demand for background info got to be pretty significant absorber of the time that they had - Dunno.

but then they started changing the color of the lines and the bands. I think they started mixing the lines together which I have no doubt they will do with the 2 new lines as well.

Oh ok, I misunderstood then. I was told by others that their first few lines were banded and while you couldn't request a specific line (like the website says), you could call after your order arrived and find out which line(s) you got. @GaryDean26 I thought you told me that? But I have not ordered from them myself.
In late 2011 and early 2012 they DID send out banded CLB chicks. They stopped that by about the Summer of 2012 from what I can gather. When I heard they were no longer banding CLB's I wondered if it had something to do with the post below from cjwaldon's CLB shipment.

My chicks came with and without leg bands. Jenny told me that was to designate which line each chick came from but provided no other details. I lost four chicks because their legbands were caught in the excelsior bedding in the shipping box - DOA. I lost another chick a few days later. Leg bands on started juveniles may be ok, but leg bands on day old maybe not such a good idea. Either order extras, or ask GFF not put leg bands on them.
Note: I band my own chicks at day-old to mark which pairing they are from or to track color and development from hatch to maturity of individuals. The only trouble I have ever had with ziptie leg bands is that they have to be changed every 10 days or else they could cut into the legs of the chick as they grow.

I band mine too. I can tell the parents and age of every chicken I own.
According to what I'm reading now about breeding - there are common threads in all the works. Of course you want to start with the best stock that you can - and then it is the really GOOD record keeping...and by knowing the parents of every pairing you have that. Then of course there is the selection -- and that requires knowledge and a good eye - and probably most important of all is the vision of what your desired outcome is....(but then the vision is always important in whatever you do!)

You got that right.... we took our dogs in for their rattle-snake vaccine booster and I was telling the vet that I would be foot-soaking some chickens for 5-minutes at a time -- and he got a good chuckle out of that --- "Five minutes is a LONG time".... Actually they are getting so cool with their "spa treatment" that they relax, we listen to the radio -- talk a little, watch the clock - and share a meal worm or two in the pricess.. Now they are getting quite matter-of-fact about it.

I'm on the Facebook Cream Legbar page. You guys are pups and very polite on critiques compared to what I've seen on there. I put my colorful roo with neon yellow legs up and expect to get a good flogging. From what I read, I know hes got too much color but I don't care. He's reminds me of an 80s rock star. PS there are lots and lots of pics. Interesting as I

study the proposed SOP.

Honestly I think he is sexy. Maybe too much color but he is beautiful regardless.
