The Legbar Thread!

It is my understanding that this virus can be transmitted either from mother to egg or chicken to chicken. And yes unfortunately those chickens that don't exhibit symptoms shed the virus to other chickens. This situation has devastated us. Please be careful in purchasing chickens from Greenfire Farms.
I have quite a few GFF chickens (2 first generation, 4 second generation - hatched from GFF stock at Highview in Wimberly, 1 second generation -- so cute born on Christmas day and crowing his little head off!) here and they are very healthy, and their descendents are also healthy.

I think that enola is right - this should be taken up with them directly, and probably not in this thread.

I got Legbars from GFF. None have any issues, aside from one hen who thinks she should be the Farm Boss.

Did you write GFF about your concerns?

Diane - any Personality Portraits of the Particlular chicken who wants to be Farm Boss?

From what I read it can be transmitted via eating eggs...so if you have an egg eater, she can get the disease. As well chicken to chicken.

So if your chickens came in contact with another hen, (carrier?) then can get it....did I read this right?

Are you the only one who got chickens from GFF who got the disease? Did any of your other chickens get it?

Over 75% of my chickens are from GFF or from parents from GFF. The only deaths are due to the local roaming lab or coyotes. Or egg bound.

So quick question. I have my CL rooster in a pen with CL pullets as well as SLC and SLW also 1 blue egg laying EE. I had hatched some of the SLC eggs that the CL roo had covered and ended up with 2 pullets. Those pullets are 28weeks old and one just laid her 1st egg today. I was honestly expecting green because he would have passed the blue gene on, but the egg is a light brown very similar to the cochin egg she hatched from. Does that say anything about the blue egg gene from my CL rooster or is it just how it goes sometimes?

Hm that would be a red flag to me subject to some test mating. Blue egg gene is dominant, so OO or Oo hens will lay blue eggs. If the rooster has two blue egg genes as he ought to, then every offspring should get an O from him and have some tint of blue or green. If he only has one blue egg gene, Oo, then half of his offspring get the blue O and half get the non-blue o. I don't see any reason for a pure Cream Legbar to have ANY offspring not laying blue or green eggs.

It's a punnett square:
Pure for blue gene Dad:
O O
Mom: o | Oo Oo
o |Oo Oo

Impure for blue gene Dad:
O o
Mom: o | Oo oo
o |Oo oo

He is definitely pure CL I hatched him from a blue egg from a local source that got her stock directly from gff.
This does not sound good to me :( Im really bummed. He is my only CL rooster right now and I have had him for a year waiting on some girls and now the 2 pullets are nearing point of lay. I was hoping for some good things from my trio this spring. I still have one of his daughters also a CLxSLW that is at point of lay so soon I will find out her egg color. Any suggestions on what to test mate him with? Are all of the pullets I have in his pen fine to test him with? Any suggestions are welcome. Agh I feel like so stressed now
