The Legbar Thread!

Here from feather site---
where the male and female are side by side the female has a tight S toward the front of the comb.

Love this picture BTW - from the 2013 cover of Fancy Fowl magazine - of which Grant Brereton is the editor...look at the S on that cover girl!!

VERY informative - this article by Sigrid Van Dort---
not only does the very bottom of the article show the S - but she explains why the male and female are different and the cause of the S.

I think Sigrid just about walks on water---and you can tell her I said that....

Thanks for sharing some wonderful links. Greatly added to the knowledge base.

Hi all--please look at the pic of these 3 Cream Legbar chicks--the 2 smaller hatched Tuesday 5/27 and the one darker/larger one hatched 5/23.

There are 2 pullets that are obvious but the 3rd one does not have the distinct white spot on the head and has a faint chipmunk stripe. The 2 younger are from a different breeder/flock than the single larger chick. I also am not sure why the younger chipmunk striped chick has a 2-tone stripe? Is that common? THANKS

Any ideas on the little ambiguous chick?

They look like 3 girls to me!

These are my girls from a month ago. Your light girl reminds me of mine in the front and center. She looks like this now. Very light with a light crest growing out.

It's hard to tell without seeing the eyeliner. That is usually the determining factor for me as I sex by eyeliner and not the chipmunk strip nor the dot on the head. But either way, I would caution the use of that chick on the top for breeding. Cream Legbars are supposed to be able to be sexed easily with no question at birth. The autosexing is a fundamental feature of Cream Legbars. If you do breed this one, you risk making your line difficult to breed in the future.

If it does turn out to be a pullet, she should still make an excellent addition to your layer-only coop.

As for the different colors in the down, this is very common. Cream Legbars can have down colors ranging from cream to gray to dark brown or even chestnut.

DCchicken--I will post pics of the eyliner--all 3 do have eyeliner as I recall, but a pic will be better.

THANKS for all the feed back!

Here are some example eyeliner pics.

I picked the picture of the boy with a light gray down as that is the hardest to sex to demonstrate. The disruption of the eyeliner is caused by barring (either single of double barred). Boys are doubled barred and hence the fuzziness on the back and eyeliner. It also causes a dot on the head. However, some pullets can also have the dot but it must be small. If you learn to sex by eyeliner, you can apply it to other autosexing breeds such as Bielefelders. Take a look below at the tub of Bielefelders. Guess which ones are the boys? I hope this helps.
