The Legbar Thread!

FMP--He looks very 'macho man'.

Totally different topic. I just picked up a pullet egg that weighed 1.6oz -- larger than most first eggs, and these pullets are starting later...26-weeks, The shocker for me was the color OAC074! Never have gotten such a green egg from a Legbar. Usually my Legbars are OAC179. This one is truly green.

Blues are really hard to capture on film, as is cream...salmon...gray...barring...etc LOL! What are your goals? Cream? Golden Crele? That will help a lot for feedback purposes.

Never thought about the color of the bird. Thought they were the same color in the US.

I tried getting a pic of my favorite rooster but he wasn't cooperating. Here is my favorite rose combed cockerel. His tail has white and his comb has a curve in the middle (due to his crest) but he is larger than the other cockerels and he has a better flow. He was drinking so his stance is a little off.

That is a huge male. I like those larger sized birds. They make it worth making a meal out of compared to the smaller sized ones.

The cream variety is the same as the UK, but a growing number of people prefer the undiluted look of the gold and reds in the golden crele. There has been some work on a second variety. That's why I asked :) if you haven't had a chance to read the cream standard yet, it's on the cream legbar club website as well as the cream Legbar standard of perfection thread here.

I bought a dozen CL eggs and hatched out only two. They were both males and one had terrible color and the other was a runt. So...I bought another dozen from another breeder and hatched out exactly one pullet and 7 cockerels. I almost gave up on the breed but found a lady who was mixing several Greenfire lines of CL. Out of 20 eggs I hatched 17...6 pullets and 11 cockerels. So, I'm guessing that the main problem is inbreeding. I'm using the cockerel from that batch that gave me my first pullet with that pullet and the 6 pullets from the next batch. They have varying amounts of crests but I decided that mixing the lines and having better fertility was more important. I have my first egg in the hatcher now and it is supposed to hatch in three days (but would be the product of that first related pair in the photos below). I know he's fertile as he has already fathered some "easter eggers" with my Black Stars with good results.

Hey there, is that a Black Austrolorp in you're avatar pic? I have a small flock of female Austrolorps and I'm planning to add some in the spring. Would you like to sell some hatching eggs? If so, please PM. Nice lookin CCL roo!

Congrats!
I like your starter pair!! -- People get all caught up in coloration and forget about type, productivity, and hatchability -- and it sounds like you have suffered a bit from - as you say- the results of inbreeding. When I look at yours I see beautiful tail angles -- I'm jealous -- because tail angles is my next priority. I think that that pair has great combs too. A female with a smaller comb is probably the only way that we will reduce the size on our males' combs. Your male has an upright comb, very visible crest and I think a nice type...same with your female.

So glad that you were persistent with these despite the set backs. I may come to you someday for hatching eggs!!

Some of the problems with inbreeding - smaller size, fewer eggs, lower hatchability -- DO seem to be showing up in our breed...and we need to Really keep an eye on those factors as well.
All I can say is 'keep up the good work' -- and good luck with the one in the hatcher...I hope it is a female -- as your odds are in need of more females...and of course can't wait to see a picture.
good luck!

sorry Ladycat -- chicken pickin did a superb job of filling in the blanks.

OAC is a short cut to be able to have people in two different locations look at the same color.

I wonder if they are still available -- maybe we should make them available through the CL Club--- I know there was talk that they don't correlate identically with Pantone colors, since no alternative has been brought forth that is readily avilable and equally low-cost -- I think they are a really handy tool. If I hadn't sent all my spares out - I would send you one -- but I have no extras right now.

different subject --

Do people with greener eggs get larger eggs? or do you not notice a difference? I'm beginning to think that there may be a correlation. In other words...if you have a CL that lays your bluest and you have some CLs that lay some that are less blue and more toward the green scale...do the green ones look larger - weigh more? :O/
