The Legbar Thread!

Can anyone guess how many Legbars I have in this picture? I had some hybrids and some other breeds in there as well.

Just trying to have a little fun! Have posted this on the Legbar Hybrid Forum as well so please excuse me for that.

I see three I would think are CLs for sure -- but maybe there are more -

ETA - maybe I have some insider information though. LOL -- the center chick with the white head blob and the two females that are facing him on either side of him.... With hybrids too it is tricky to know.

Kathy, you were close, the middle one is a boy, the one facing him towards the left is also one of your chicks, however the 3rd one on the right facing the boy is not a Legbar. From this angle I cannot tell what breed but its not a Legbar.

Thanks to this hatch I learnt how to differentiate between Legbar, Barnevelder and Legbar x Barnevelder hybrid chicks (when the Sire is Legbar)

Here are some pics of the Legbar chicks from the eggs I received from @chickat:

I guess we can confirm a boy and a girl?

Then here is one boy chick from my flock?

Then I got really thrown off by the Legbar x Barnevelder hybrids. It was such a crisp chipmunk pattern and a very concise head pattern like a Legbar girl in the following pic:

But then I looked for the eye pattern and that was more like a Barnevelder (actually closer to a BLR pattern) Here are the side view pics:

Whereas Barnevelders obviously had a very different eye pattern,
Plus their down has bronze tinge to it. Plus you cannot mistake their orange-pink legs and feet.

Here are their pics for reference:

No Welsummers have hatched so far, otherwise that would have been an additional headache.

Kathy, Ice's baby has hatched already. Looks like a boy to me but will wait till it gets fluffed to post pics.

oh, you live & you learn! The male that I got from that same paring as your boy in the center is one of the lighter downed varieties of chick. It will be interesting to see if there are any differences as they grow out - if you end up growing 'em out. ;O)

Yay! your Easter hatch is going very well! I will bet that your Barnies will begin to look different from your CLs very quickly.
Having a discussion with dretd about the little silver of white inside the V on the CL females. Seems that there were several who didn't realize that in the UK SOP it is called for. :O) -- We were wondering if the females with the white will grow up to have more distinct barring than those that lack it. So just the opposite of what some were surmising - it could be a contributer to the autosexing rather than the opposite.

Overall very well 27 hatched so far out of the 52 in lockdown. Hatch Day has not even started yet.

So there is supposed to be a sliver of white on the V on the pullets head? I don't think I knew that. Do you have pics to show this?
