Yeah, I'll never forget that. Warm, cuddly, with a fresh "life is going on" kind of smell. One of my fondest memories!

I'm hoping, as I continue to delve into chickens, that I can enjoy those kind of nuances with chickens so that I can be a better caregiver for them. But the bridge between mammals and birds is a long one, so I've got a "snoot full" (sorry, couldn't resist!) of learning to do!

And that is why I joined BYC - I have learned SO MUCH!!!

How lovely!!!! Lucky girlfriend! How are you finding the roos temperament? I've heard that the roos can be a bit forward but others say that they can be calm and accepting of human interaction.

Any idea at what age a crest has to be there for show? Not that I'm interested (spent too many years in dogs for that!) in showing, just pretty eggs, but I do like having animals as close to their standard as I can get to help preserve the breed.

So far as breeding crested to non-crested, I know that in canaries breeding crested to crested equals bald! But obviously this is not the case with chickens!!!!

Crests are usually apparent by 2 weeks though some small ones seem to take 3-4 weeks to be obvious. CLs are different than most of the other crested chicken breeds because they do not (or should not) have vaulted skulls. Always breed crested to crested! Best wishes with your birds!

The roosters seem to be laid back or aggressive. Early handling will amplify their calm or aggressive nature too. Cull any aggressive ones unless you need them to be so for free range purposes. 90% of their male offspring will usually have similar temperaments to themselves! Best wishes!

No aggression at all so far, e will move out of the way for me, eat out of my hand, be inquisitive but keeps his distance when I'm walking about, when I open the gate he will be standing near the entrance and if I extend my arm to him (crouched down on his level) he will not peck or be aggressive but just backs away

Thanks for the roo and crest answers, folks! Here's another quick question - how long do Legbars normally lay eggs? There is a local person here that has two 2-3 year old hens whom I would hate to see go into the stew pot. Could I still count on them to give me two or three eggs each per week so they could just live out their lives? How hard would it be to integrate them into my existing flock which is about 10 months old?
