The Legbar Thread!

I've been obsessed with this breed since I learned of its existence several years ago. But...are these standardized anywhere? Is there an aesthetic standard to follow or have they been bred strictly for their utility?

Here is the official "recipe" for an autosexing breed like the Creme Legbar:

I had hoped to use a Wheaten Ameraucana and Production Black (barred) Leghorns.

I have to say, though, the Norwegian Jaerhon is VERY similar and now readily available in the states, but they lack the crest and blue eggs which are key points for me.

I wonder sometimes how one might go about working in additional traits like the blue eggs into an established autosexing breed without losing the autosexing aspect?

Anyway, love the pictures of the birds. Don't freak out if your CCLB have faults, you all have to start somewhere. It's what you do NEXT that matters!

I am really sad and upset. One of my CCLB hens is really sick. I am completely at a loss. She is bright and alert and has just become very weak. She does not puff up nor does she have any discharge of congestion and she has no fever. I have been hand feeding her for over a week. She is happy to see me and eats well, when I feed her, but is just very weak. She is able to maintain a normal position, but her head is very wobbly. I have never seen anything like this before. Do any of you have any ideas? The vet is also stumped. We are wondering if she injured herself somehow.

What do you all think?

Sorry to hear Suzie. I don't really have any ideas except that it wouldn't hurt to get her on some vitamins/electrolytes if you haven't already. Hope she gets better soon!

Her pupils are clear and she seems to see just fine. I will check her eyes again. I have been giving her a nutri drench and Vit. B Complex. I also put her on an antibiotic. I just don't know how she can just keep hanging in there, but she is. I have around 100 birds and no one else is under the weather.

She doesn't have the symptoms of Mareks. And if she had Mareks I would have other sick chickens. She has been like this almost 2 weeks. She is no better or worse. My vet and I are both stumped and I don't want to kill her to find out what she has. If she dies, I will have a necropsy done to determine cause of death. But for right now I am trying supportive care.

Marek's disease is characteristically a disease of young chickens but older birds can also be affected. In contrast to the lymphoid leukosis tumor response, Marek's disease may be observed in more diverse locations.

If it is Marek's it would be this type I think.

The neural type of Marek's is typified by progressive paralysis of the wings, legs and neck. Loss of body weight, anemia, labored respiration and diarrhea are common symptoms. If lesions are present, they are confined to the nerve trunks and plexes enervating the paralyzed extremities. Frequently no gross lesions can be observed.

Acute Marek's disease can be extremely rapid in its course, producing mortality in apparently healthy birds.

I started her on Electrolytes today, long with the Nutri drench and Vit. B Complex.
