I think you should get 7.... 5 hens 2 roos. If both roos survive... then you have enough hens to divide them up.. If only one roo survives.. he can handle all 5 hens just fine.

might want to keep that possibility in mind when ordering.

What combination of M-F did you order? I've been thinking about ordering some - or getting hatching eggs. If I order chicks, I've thought of getting three pairs - but then I don't really need that many males. :)

Eventually I want 3 trios, each a different bloodline. ( since only 2 bloodlines are available right now, I'm going to buy 2 roosters and four hens to start.). I took a class once on how to manage a gene pool on a small farm without breeding yourself into a corner and starting with 3 groups as your foundation stock was key.

I'm going to be doing two orders with flower hens filling out the orders. Those of you that have already gotten chicks-do they have legbands and a way to know who came from what breeding pen in case they change the legbands colors in the future?

It is my understanding from communication with Jenny at GFF that the second line they imported is not available for sale yet. She told me there is a waiting list already but none available. And mine did not come with legbands or even any indication of how old they were. I wish they would band them for hatch dates at least so we could know that. Oh well.

My chicks came with and without leg bands. Jenny told me that was to designate which line each chick came from but provided no other details. I lost four chicks because their legbands were caught in the excelsior bedding in the shipping box - DOA. I lost another chick a few days later. Leg bands on started juvenilles may be ok, but leg bands on day old maybe not such a good idea. Either order extras, or ask GFF not put leg bands on them.

Oh! Good to know. I'm glad I havent put my 2nd order in yet.

your chicks are so cute. I am hoping to get cream legbar eggs for my birthday. My hens wattle seems to have turned bright red and grown an inch overnight. did your hen do that and how long after did you get eggs? I was expect her to lay at the beginning of January but now I am hoping for dec. 24th my birthday.

Did you get an egg by your b-day???
