The Legbar Thread!

s of my chicken's combs with possible avian pox....the splash Isbar has it the worst....sorry for the poor picture quality...it was dark, I was using my phone...

This is avian pox. The splash isbar's eye is a bit concerning. I would give it at shot of Tylan, especially if there are any systemic symptoms such as lethargy. The secondary bacterial infection can do damage and the Tylan should take care of that. Also vitamins, and keep him cool.

I have found that the best way to keep avian pox down is to keep a fan on the chickens at all time during the summer months. With the high wind, the mosquito's cant land on the chickens. I have kept a fan on all the coops I own and so far, no avian pox this year.

I have had it a few years back and it clears up on its own. The one swollen eye is pretty bad. You have been given good advice on how to treat her.

Good luck :)

I have 2 box fans in my coop going 24/7....didn't know that might help, but have been doing that for the heat.....

Are you saying that the fans have been in there since before the pox appeared? Maybe they were in an area where the mosquitos were not affected by the wind. The way I have all mine positioned they cant get away from the stream of air. I have always thought it helped with pox. Maybe these last couple years haven't been as severe as years past.

I have them in the 2 end windows...so they are always in a breeze...but our mosquitoes were bad early on this year, but we've been spraying, have 2 mosquitoe magnets and a mosquito deleto, etc. ....but there are several ponds around...one by our house...a little creek about 100 yards from the house and a bigger creek another 100 yards away....so it is a constant battle. I had posted about this under the forums titled "avian pox" and a guy linked to a really good article...it said something about biting flies...I have really noticed them biting me! and have hung tons of fly strips...but again, we have a big cow pasture behind our house...

Awesome! The names are hysterical!

Just be sure to check those legbands daily or every other day because the chicks will grow fast and you don't want to overlook them. :)

I agree...those names are funny!
