The Legbar Thread!

Well sadly, the eggs I ordered fro Jordan Farm never grew...I think it was due to poor handling on the part of the USPS.  None of the eggs they sent ever grew at all.  So perhaps high summer temps and rough handling.  :(  Oh well.  Way back in May...before I knew much about the dangers of ebay eggs.  I pre-ordered some eggs from an ebay seller.  Those eggs came this past Friday...anyone else partake in that pre-sale?  Any luck with those birds?  I had nearly forgotten about those eggs until I got the email saying they were coming.  :)

So this is my last attempt at hatching CL this year.  I have the six that I have posted on here, but it seems only one of them may be worth keeping for a breeding pen, the others will go to the laying flock and the boys will be grown out and sent to Camp Kenmore.  If I don't get something worth keeping from these eggs then I think I will try to get day olds or juveniles next year.  I am not about to give up on my dream of having them, but I am quite frustrated and hate to even think about the money I have spent this summer trying.

I would blame the heat. I ordered two batches from same seller but one was late spring and the other a month ago. First batch was 90%hatch second batch was 30%. Pretty much all other variable were the same. Anyway, I've even had trouble lately with eggs from local sellers that I've always hatched at 80% or higher. Now many of those hatch rates are closer to 50%. My incubator settings are the same so I just think the heat has something to do with it. Next summer I won't be any eggs to hatch if temps are like this again.

awww guys! ive just looked through some old photos on my laptop and found one of melow when she was in the pet shop with the other hens. I wanted the Light sussex, my friend at first was going to get me the other cream legbar you can see but she didn't like it because it had a weird tail, so she came back with Melow and i couldn't be happier.
Interesting tail on that cream legbar female in front. Mostly the barring is very light and not pronounced like that. Doesn't Melow look appealing there? No wonder you got her.

YEA!!! I got my first cream legbar egg today - at exactly 23 weeks old. Maybe that'll encourage the other two CLs to start laying. It's a little egg - but a pretty shade of blue - prettier than the Araucana eggs I've been getting. So excited!

I found 2 eggs in 2 nests today. My second pullet has started laying about 2 weeks after the first. One more to go

Flaming Chicken,
A friend came by this week with her blown out eggs. She had a few samples of Araucana and we compared them to mine. We both thought mine we're a pinch bluer. Is this what you think?

WyoChickenMamma, promise me if this hatch doesn't go, let me know. I would love to help you out.

Also, I thought I might be shipping this Monday, but I'm not. I have a dozen eggs labeled line A and line B eggs (all fresh, less than 1 week old). It's just a window that might work for someone. Any takers, give me a hollar (PM)!

CarolJ, Congrats on the first egg, so cool!

People keep asking me how the Cream Legbar eggs compare with Easter Eggers, Araucanas, and Ameraucanas. I have yet to see any side-by-side comparisons. Can anyone comment on differences? Production rates, color, size, shell thickness, etc. I have seen 2 or 3 comments on the topic, but don't feel like I can really draw any conclusions yet.

I have all four, although the only one laying yet is the EE. Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to comment.
