We are moving so I have some misc chicken wire and about 25ft of green garden fencing and some about 75+ feet of 3 ft chicken wire fencing that needs to be removed, and this kiddie pool I used as a duck pond. Is anyone interested? I live in Gallatin off Douglas bend. Would like to trade for a couple pullets or ?

So we are expecting single digit temperatures in the next few days. Because I have huge fluffy English Orpingtons I am not worried about them getting cold but I am worried about the roosters combs and wattles. Last year I put Vaseline on them but I also had supplemental heat...this year I am trying to do with out the supplemental heat because heat lamps are so dangerous.
I have seen several people saying that putting Vaseline on them makes them more susceptible to frostbite because the Vaseline freezes on them.
I would like to know what you all think about that and what is the best way to prevent frostbite....they have plenty of ventilation and the humidity percentage is very low so I am hoping they will be ok in the up coming days!

This one was dog-sized. We have a pic of him beside our lab-mix (about 90 lbs) and he wasn't much smaller than the dog. When we build our run, we're going to build it with large posts, cattle panels on the outside and hardware cloth on the inside. I am going to run hotwire across to top and bottom. Those kitties can just sit and watch the birdies!:cd

Has anyone dealt with bear?

I have several hundred chicks under a month old, 2 litters of week old rabbits, and I'm expecting 75 lambs starting any day. None will have heat lamps. Heat lamps, in my experience are not only not necessary, they prevent proper acclimation and encourage respiratory problems. Not to mention the fire hazard. Stock is much hardier and healthier if not raised with heat. Poultry, rabbits and sheep love the cold.

@DMRippy
I think I got my first egg from one of the girls I got from you in Late November. Some chickie laid an egg while on the roost last night and its froze to the poop board. It's a strange, mauve/lavender color?! Do you know who it might have come from? (Black Eng Orp, Blue Rock, Partridge Rock, Cuckoo, or Blue Cuckoo?). I didn't have my phone with me to take a pic, and it couldn't pull it off without breaking it.

My guess would be one of the cuckoos. There eggs are not as dark as a copper marans. Is it darker than a normal brown egg? When I find eggs in pop they tend to get a bloom on them of some sort (I don't know what else to call it) but I see that MORE if not exclusively with marans. Is it kind of chalky looking?

It was a little darker than a normal brown egg, but not quite as dark as one of the other Marans I got from you earlier in the year. Last night, the blue cuckoo was on the roost above the egg.....don't know if she was in the same spot the previous night. (Not chalky)

I actually had three eggs yesterday. I haven't been getting any eggs at all. I was buying feed the other day. There was an old man behind me buying feed as well. He asked me if I was getting any eggs. I told him "Yeah, at WalMart!" He just laughed.....:he

A couple questions:

1) Do you let a freshly laid egg sit for a certain amount of time before you as it to your incubator? I know some collect all week and then set. Do some set daily?

2) Does anyone know if all Barnvelders are double laced?

3) Is it a tried and true way to tell a fertile egg by the white dot on the yolk?

You can set the day they are laid no problem. You don't want to set eggs daily because they will hatch daily and that is a lot to keep up with.

I don't know of any other type of Barnivelders but double laced (blue and reg) BUT they are not a breed I follow. Seems like there was a another laced type but i can't remember what it was.

That dot is a sure fire test of fertility.
