you're really killin' me... can I hatch some and you brood 'em?
If I can keep em????
I am collecting prod red eggs this week, getting marans and lav ameraucana and
wheaten/blue wheaten ameraucanas too. Setting next weekend if all goes well!
Breeding pens: We have started pulling pallets apart for 10ft framing materials and I may have all the pallets I need for the coops too. Picked out the spot. Now to find fencing and old decking material. 10 pens will that be enough???? It will have to do till we build our house. I have 4 12x15 pens, two will become layer flock and two grow out pens. Oh yeah I am getting a bachelor pen too.... over the moon excited!
I let mine run loose, and that's coming to an end due to the end of tick season. I got chickens cause my wife (of 10 years on 9-29) got the tick fever. Now I want to focus on some good breeds and hatch bunches in the spring to sell. I've got some nice mottled cochins... one frizz roo and one straight feather hen, which as I understand should get me half friz and half normal. Got a nice red cochin hen, a lav cochin hen, a black roo, and one roo that is a mixed up mess I call Eddy Murphy(I'm gumby darn it!).
My first incubation eggs are all four sweet little girls, barred EE's. Great personalities!
Got a pair of Anconas that I never see, but sleep in my tulip tree,
The rest are two cornish hens, and two buff orps that is one definite roo, and 1 possible hen... And my barred cochin roo, golden seabright roo (Vandy) and ? roo i thought was a hen till he made a lame attempt at crowing a few weeks ago. I have no Idea what that one is.
Two dominickers, two white leghorns, and a rir. all those are pullets.
Quick question: How do you situate the eggs for lockdown? I plan on taking out the automatic turner and laying paper towels over the wire grid on the bottom. Do you put the eggs in an egg carton - small end down, or lay them on their sides????

Egg cartons work great for me. I have tons and use the paper ones so i can just toss them.
BTW ANYBODY is there an easy way to mark the chicks? I tried zip ties, but they lost some and they are already too small and will have to be removed soon. Would a color sharpe work for a couple of weeks?
They make spiral leg bands for chicks...any band though will need to be changed frequently..the magic marker only works very short term.If you want to mark them and be done get a toe punch it never needs changing
Just make sure you have records of how you punch what so you don't forget.
Congrats on the chicks. In 21 days I will have a new bunch..between Oktoberfest and my Camping trip it took some planning to get these eggs in the bator.
