My Jersey Giant and one of my Araucanas both went broody around 6 months of age. And they both were/are excellent broodies! The araucana is currently sitting on her third clutch of eggs - due to hatch tomorrow. Like clockwork - as soon as one group of chicks is old enough to be on their own, she'll wait a couple weeks and then go broody again.

Sounds like my silkie, LOL. She loves raising babies.. She will go broody right after I take chicks from her, I put her in my outside brooder to keep her happy. She loved it. Took her out the other day, put her with a new roo... she fussed.

I was working on a friends farm..She went inside to change shoes, and I went to collect eggs. I opened the coop and shut the door behind me so they didnt get out.. Then I relized...there is no way to open the door from the inside... So I crawled through the chicken door to their pen....no way to get out...So I had to sit there and wait for her to get back...and I am standing there...looking at the chickens, as they stare at me....I could picture their thoughts.." He aint a chicken..."

To funny, I am glad Im not the only one!!

Well the first 2 days he chased her like crazy, she still done her clucking thing. Few days she beat the crap out of him. then now it is mutual. they drink, eat, and sleep together.
Just waiting on eggs from them

But with my luck by the time she does lay, she will sit on it and not want to get up. LOL

Then when it hatched she didnt get off that baby for a week so i brought them in the house now the baby is 3 weeks old i should post more pics of her

Now I know why people make such a big deal about broody hens. I just got pecked twice by mine. Didn't hurt to bad but it scared me pretty good. She was like a mad miniature pit bull with feathers, bound & determined I wasn't getting her egg. Then she went out of the coop raising nine different kinds of ... Well you know. If there's a bright side, I think it means my birds are healthy. I mean if they weren't I wouldn't have one trying to hatch eggs would I? Isn't it to cold to let her try? The chicks would hatch around the middle of Dec. I might let her try to sit one out just to see if she's serious. What do ya'll say?
Let her try?
Or keep taking her eggs?
