The Middle Tennessee Thread

They usually use leghorn roosters for the color chicks. They have really gotten the colors more intense than they were back when I was a kid! Of course that was a long time ago!lol I am not for sure its even legal to do this anymore! I really see no harm in it. they never seem affected by it and being leghorn roos they usually grow up very fast.

Just a few year ago, they sold ducks and chicks colored. might have been someone privately dying

I know some hatcheries sell them at Easter too.... now sure if they ship them to TN colored or not...... I have never seen them in person... just pic posted on BYC. Seems wrong..... but cute for a day or two LOL

Just found this on a site describing laws concerning the treatment of chickens in Tennessee.

It is a criminal offense for anyone to offer to sell, barter, transport or give away a fowl animal that has been dyed or otherwise had its color changed. Violation of this statute constitutes a Class C misdemeanor.

Interesting.... I wonder if the intent of that was not to alter the color of fowl as FRAUD. You know like faking, coloring in white feathers with a sharpie kinda thing. Either way I will NOT be doing this nor ordering any colored chicks.

I have colored chicks before and they are soooo cute. No harm was one to them and I think the only reason it is illegal is because people buy them because they are cute and then do not want them after the color grows out. It is not harmful to the chicks.

I have a book that teaches how to color chicks. i mean i would never do it but it was very interesting to learn. its very risky the way the book teaches to do it. you risk killing the poor lil chick doing it.

I saw on U-tube where someone dyed pigeons, they were grownbirds . I don't know what they used to dye them with but they were really neat! Even the dark colored birds were dyed and showed good colors. I have been wanting to try taht but not for sure what to use. I always thought it would great if pigeons game in parakeet colors!lol I also found this picture last year, taken a some show.Must not have been inTn or it would have been illegal! Sure ae cute tho!
