The guinea survived the night. I think I am going to keep them penned through these few cold nights.

Found 12 BBS Copper Marans eggs today

that is a record for Marans. The others are laying pretty good right now too. We are putting up the plastic around the runs and it is making a big difference. One more set of pens to go and we are DONE

I pulled 20 new babies out of the hatcher today and set the next batch to hatch Sunday. Hoping for a few more from my roo that died. But so far I have about 15 chicks from him so I should be doing ok. I am getting excited about hatching in the spring anyone else? Setting up my sex link pens to include, Sex Link Marans, Sex Link EE, BSL, hum.... what else..... I know I am missing something. I may start setting eggs mid Jan and then go full tilt till then. No more hatching for me till late spring.

I had my doubts. I think I only have a couple developing. He is not interested in the molting hens.... yuck

Weather is going to be a yo-yo all week with a mix of about everything. Even snow near or around Christmas day.

Yes, hearing about everyone putting up plastic. We too have re-enforced the coop.

Had to lock-down the hatch doors and weigh down the roof panels due to the high winds the other night. Lots of stuff blew around except the farm.

Simple effective mouse trap ( chicken safe so far )

Just a piece of downspout fastened to some left over wood from the picket fence construction. The downspout is 14" long I put the bait in the middle and a trap at each end. The downspout is tall enough to let the action on the trap do it's thing. Make sure and push the traps into the downspout so the chickens can't step on them. Checked one this morning out in the coop and it got one. He cleared it on the way in but the other trap got him on his way out. No more stolen bait and empty traps from now on.

nice trap idea. are your cuckoos still laying. i have gotten a few eggs from the pullets i got from you and thats it. i am still looking for a french cuckoo maran rooster. cant find one anywhere. i did find a man in nc that has eggs for sale. i need a rooster now.

I'm doing the NYD Hatchalong w/ 22 eggs from a BlueCM Rooster, he was over 6 hens 2 of which were BCM, I don't need any more Roos and surely will get a couple,
if you don't mind growing one out then I'd be happy to let you have a cockeral as soon as they are old enough to sex....just pm me if you are interested.

Tim mine are still laying pretty good right now color has lightened a bit. I got a birchen roo to put over 4 of my fav hens and will be working on egg color and getting the french standards in these. Hoping to have some decent silver cuckoo's one day. I culled down to one cuckoo roo he is seperated right now with two of my least fav hens to keep him company while the other hens dry out for the birchen roo. I think donna had one for sale don't know if she still has it or not. I have been offered the remander of the flock from the guy I got mine from originally, I think he my have a few roos ( clean legged ). Your welcome to some of the offspring I hatch out from my crossing. I think the silver and cuckoo make for a fine looking bird, but thats just my opinion.

SWEET. We got a few extra spouts that were damaged last year in a storm. Kept them around for something. Now the something has arrived. THANKS !
