The Middle Tennessee Thread

After 6 weeks of my hens begin separated from my roosters they are finally starting to grow feathers back!

Unfortunately most of the hens feathers are broken off instead of pulled out so before they look decent they will have to molt!

The hens are enjoying their time out of the breeding pens! But the roosters on the other hand are not LOL

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

We got so much work done! Helps to not be slowed down by the heat. It was pretty hot there for a couple of days. We could barely breathe. I know this is just a temporary reprieve but I will take any I can get LOL.

We have ALMOST converted all my pens in the shop over to wire floors. NEXT we will start cleaning the pens out back and moving some OUT of the shop too. OR we will clean the front pens and start moving juvies out side.... either way we will be moving a lot of birds OUTSIDE! Then I can finish those brooders that Troy started for me. I have 2 more that are just the shells but we know how we want them now. The one that is finished is working GREAT! One day I will make a how to page on them.

Well I finally did it! I killed my mean red rooster, Rufus, and scalded, plucked, dressed him out and put him in the fridge. He jumped me on my day off when I had time to do him. Cut my finger taking his head off. Not bad though. Got to adjust the technique slightly to prevent that in the future. But his head came off quick and clean. I used my Dad's butcher cleaver that is carbon steel and can be sharpened to knife sharpness. Held his head in my left hand and put the blade on the back of his neck at the base of the skull and then pushed through hard. My mistake was not holding my left hand still. My left arm curled slightly countering the thrust of the right and I nicked my forefinger. Must hold the left rock steady next time.

I had tied him from the shower head by his feet by baling twine and forgot what my mother had told me how the body doesn't die right off but runs around flapping without its head. I had not tied the wings down so I got "babptized" in blood. The shower looked like an episode of Dexter. So my husband comes home from work while I am scalding and plucking and haven't got to the clean up portion yet. When he saw the shower he came out on the porch and asked "You are cleaning up the Psycho shower aren't you?" Of course!" I answered. So the shower got bleached and I still had time to shear a sheep that day. It was a good day off.

Next time, cut the bottom and part of the top out of a bleach jug and hang it by a wire or nail it to a tree. A cheap killing cone.. I just Slice the artery and let them bleed out into a bucket.

I have the answer: What you need to do to stop the Roosters from pulling feathers is to pull their teeth. Happy 4th of July!

We have a year old polish top hat that isn't looking so good. She and her sisters are the same age and look almost identical. However now this one looks a bit puffier than the other.
Most of the time she prefers to hang out in the coop instead of running around outside with everyone else. We have not seen anyone picking on her. She did somehow lose all but one of her tail feathers overnight a week or so ago. She will move on her own but doesn't seem to want to do so. If treats are dropped near her she will go to them and eat and then lay down again. She pecks at the grass wherever she lays and eats blueberries (a favorite) if they are nearby but mostly she just lays there watching. We've only had chickens for about a year. Haven't seen this before. Any ideas?
