The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

ok, so I just saw my rooster mating my cuckoo marans, we think she's about 14-16 weeks now. Does that mean she should start laying soon or is my rooster just a jerk? I didn't expect her to start laying until the end of june at the earliest.
sounds about right,,she will probably be laying in a month
What age Do I start using Apple cider vinegar for baby chicks mine are one to two weeks old and how much do I add to a little water for babies?
Day one, one tablespoon for a gallon. I keep water in my old milk cartons and add the ACV. I have a few gallons sitting to fill up water's.
Pictures.. again.

I prefer not to "put all my eggs in one basket" and have many coops.

We will have the two barns, and another shelter for the pigs in the woods. I'll definitely enjoy having everything close by though. :)

Why is that, stony?
a predator breaks in a coop, god forbid a fire, a tree falls on it, you name it, you don't lose everything all at once.

I just sold hatching eggs to a local person. Lost 14 of 16 birds in one day. One of the 2 left went broody. She bought 6 eggs, but recieved 13.

Had her flock been in 2 seperate coops she only would have lost half, not nearly all.

I'm the "look at the big picture" guy.....
