The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thanks again everyone for your answers! Happy Birthday Justine!!!!

I was turning the compost today and our BO found a snake and ran around for awhile with it since everyone wanted it and she finally found a place to be alone and slurped it on down! It never was so exciting turning the compost until I got chickens!

I'm all excited because it is finally warm and not raining, so I get to take the chicks outside for the first time tomorrow. They will be three weeks old, and I'll make them a little fenced enclosure - the big girls have been very curious about the peeps and a little scared of them too.

Today, two chicks actually got into it to the point where they were pulling feathers and down off of each other. I've never seen the like! They would grab each other by the neck and haul each other around, screeching like banshees! I wanted to save the feathers because they are soo tiny, but they got snatched up and eaten before I could get them.
Some of the other chicks were pretty alarmed by the fighting. One of the chicks was a cream legbar, chipmunk so it is a girl, and I think she was the agressor.

Its time to put them on the floor, but that will have to wait til Saturday when I can move some stuff around and make sure they can't get into anything harmful. I wanted to save the feathers but they were eaten before I could grab them.

Hopefully the banty will be gone and the buddy can rejoin the flock - otherwise they will go up into the brooder. I haven't had a response yet from the hatcher about taking that chick back! and giving me something in trade .

Lol, sorry, I was just abbreviating 'Commercial Production' since I wax pedantic so often... I've really got to learn how to concisely present my opinions.

My CL girls seem to be a little more bossy as well. Does yours "sing" instead of chirp? Mine make super cute sounds, like song birds almost.

I almost died after I found out BYC has a bug that doesn't allow me to upload photos right now. I can still link, so I am okay lol. I have to share the Barred Plymouth Rocks we got this weekend. I am stoked. I LOVE them.

I hatched 19 HRIR for Camille 8 weeks ago. She just brought back a trio for me. I wasn't prepared to raise chicks 8 weeks ago, as I didn't have any place to put them, so she raised them for me in exchange for the hatch. They are adorable.

What line are your Barred Rocks, aoxa?
Derek Fulton in NS

He said he had some rocks imported many years ago from Maine and Quebec. He gave me a name, but I did not recognize it.

He's been working with them for years. He had to bring the size back into them because they were small and used the White Rock 6 years ago. They are slow to develop, but their full size is very nice. I have two older hens that are very large. The pullets need to fill out more, but are quite pretty I think.

Finally caught up. We did many families and boxed up lots of fresh fruits and Veggies donated by Walmart. Pooped so I just watched chickens after I got home. Crows let us know almost coop time there was a hawk. Girls were already near coop and I had no real problem yelling hawk and coop girls. They went in easy tonight. Whew!! Just had late dinner of fried mushrooms and fried shrimp. Now headed to bed. Forgot the comments I was going to make... mind is frazzled and body ready for heat pad and pain pills. Night!
