The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I honestly think that most of what folks treat on bumblefoot doesn't need to be treated with "surgery".  And I also think that a lot of the interventions cause more infection and trauma than the original bumblefoot did.

I dehydrated the orange peels because they were soaked with vinegar - very wet.  Can't just put them into the boxes.  But you can with just regular peels like you were using.

And I suppose if you have tons of peels like you probably do...if you dehydrated some to last you through the winter - or just let them dry naturally - you could use them all year.  Those in the vinegar are just too wet.
could you pickle the peels in the vinegar?

Lalala I don't eat oranges either but I can usually get 3 for a $1 so I buy them and last time threw the fruit part in a zip bag and put them in the freezer :) some day I might make something that's needs the juice of an orange?

As for bumblefoot. If one of the hens get it again I think I will just leave it & monitor them. It's like frost bite. A few hens had it on the tip of their combs but you can not tell who now. And while I don't think Lucy's toe nails will grow in again after she lost them she does not seem bothered by it. I did no treatment on her toes and they are fine. I never even cleaned up her feet after I noticed she lost the nails and they are fine even with her walking thru mud all day.

Maybe some orange marmalade?

I have my co-workers saving me their orange peels. They also bring in leftovers like cranberries they didn't use in muffins or veggies that they're not going to eat. Yes, they all looked at me a little strange the first time I asked for the orange peels but now they just wrap them in a papertowel and leave them on my desk. Same with leftovers from office luncheon meetings. DH just shakes his head when I bring stuff home for the girls.

And I've just been composting all my peels after I make juice! Who knew?

I still have grapefruit on the tree, and a new set of limes. Would other citrus work as a cleaner?

We've used lemons, grapefruit, and tangerines in our citrus cleaner. I'm sure limes would be nice also. But even when you've got enough cleaner, don't compost the peels! Candied orange peel is TASTY! I make some every year, which we use for nibbling, and also as a spice in pork and chicken dishes. I also turn the simple syrup that we boiled the peels in into an orange syrup. Soooo good!
