The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Well that's interesting. I think I'd rather give them FF or whey though. But very interesting. The prebiotics survived the removal of the alcohol too, interesting.

Dang now I'll have to share it with the DH

I wouldn't give alcohol to peeps but I've 8 to 10 week old birds get into silage that was fed to the dairy goats. Heck, I guess many/most folks wouldn't feed silage to dairy goats but in moderation, it really improves quantity/quality...fat content) and we've used it for years.

We also add Home brew to the birds that are being finished for slaughter. I think it helps. They seem to love it and always clean up their allotment.

If you are, indeed, dealing with sour crop, I have a treatment to suggest that has worked every time it was used.

Wine is NOT a good choice for a yeast infection.

I will pm.

"Wine is NOT a good choice for a yeast infection."

@Leah's mom curious, why would that be? Something to do with the alcohol, or tannins, or fermentation? Any alcohol? Thanks

Dry red wine contains about 1gram residual sugar per liter, so while that's still something, depending on how much you drink

, it seems quite low: fruit would contain much more. Might there be something else ?

The main issue is that you don't want to feed yeast fermented products when there is a candida infection. That means you also need to stop feeding ACV as well until it is cleared up.

I'm not sure if mine have sour crop, they don't have the smelly breath of full crops they just seemed to have lost their appetite and seemed a little slower / less fiesty, a bit more skittish etc like they do when molting. I'm out with my girls several times a day so I pick up pretty quick when something is off.

The Australorp that got my attention she was really good today, she was first to greet me this morning to be let out instead of being the last girl to hop off the roost. Usually my Wyandottes are first at the door loudly letting the neighbourhood know that they're ready to come out!

Here's a link on the red wine, scroll down: http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/natural-treatments-for-sour-crop.html
