The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I am being honest & forthright and I will tell people why we are rehoming. I had a new home for her but inexpected health issues have meant they are cutting their flock instead of adding to it. They knew why we were rehoming. If we can't find a home she is a BR so her new name may be "Dinner".
You would saddle some unsuspecting soul with a hen like that?

Here are some links to natural cocci treatment. My disclaimer, I've never tried these. But I have them in my "chicken health arsenal" if needed. I would like to buy some Kocci free to have on hand (mentioned at end of second link) but wondering if anyone has used it before. So tedious to post on my phone so I'm done!

I lied. Not done. I should say i have not used this to treat cocci but employ the methods from "fresh eggs daily" to prevent in times like now: the great snow meltdown that has created a backyard swamp

I'll check that out too. Corid, yogurt, eggs, and maybe look that up. I'll give him til Saturday or Sunday. Honestly, my husband dies all my dispatching and that's when he'll be available. He took one small drink when i held the bowl up and touched his beak with it and nibbled the eggs. I've seen chickens make big comebacks ya never know

I got two new chickens yesterday from someone on BYC. They are a black Cochin rooster and a blue frizzled Cochin. They are both so cute! She left me an egg this morning. I love the frizzled look and her sidekick sounds like a toy when he crows. They are in a pen of their own and both are very friendly. She is about 14 months and he is 7 months. Don't cochins tend toward broodiness?

If you want a more natural route for aspirin, try blueberries or turmeric. Both are high in natural aspirin. They don't like turmeric much so use just a little in his food or maybe dissolved in water (I never tried that method, just now thought of it). Blueberries, if you can get them to try them, are liked much more than turmeric. The dark skin on the berry causes them to shy away from them. I keep a bag frozen and when needed, I'll take about 1 Tbsp (or so) out and cut them in four pieces. The lighter inside color doesn't bother them so much and they will generally try them on their own.

@flylady - He'd die by the time I got all that stuff. I'll look into in for future reference. , especially the kocci-free so thank you. I just don't have quick access to fancy oils and stuff.

I'll look into that if I need aspirin lacy, thank you.

We got about 8-10 ml of corid in rooster and he took a few bites of food, so we'll see what happens. Left the corid in his water.

Okay... this is my philosophy, so you have to take it at that. But....

I don't ever treat with a medication unless I know what I'm dealing with and a specific medication is indicated. It doesn't cost much to take a dropping sample in if you suspect worms or something like cocci. Treating with medications will make their system weaker, not stronger. Even if it is treating for the correct diagnosis, it takes some recovery after a medication to restore the system to health. If you're just "taking a stab in the dark" your medication may be the "straw that breaks the camel's back" so to speak, as it ads another stressor to the system.

Then... if you do have an illness, the focus of "NATURAL CHICKEN KEEPING" is PREVENTION. If it's just a single bird with issues, and you're using natural husbandry, it's probably a bird that is weak in some respect. But always take a look at issues that may CAUSE illness or problems so that you can make healthy changes for prevention in the future :D

I agree with you for the most part but corid is a thiamine disrupt er. It works by not letting the cysts use thamine and they die. The worse that can happen is if it is used for a long time and then it would be a vitamin deficiency.

With Cocci, there would not be time to get a test--the little rooster would be dead in a day without it.

Hmm hmmm. Well he's been going so long. I don't know. He took it and we'll see. Coccidiosis would be likely cause we had 24 inches of snow and then 24 hours of rain but ammonia could be it too as wet goes with that as well. It's hard to do good by them when you have weather like that but i try. We was in to our knees changing bedding out in that stuff.
