Quote: Well, with thoughts about the ecological inefficiency of growing beef being pretty popular these days, you might find a large market base of hippies that wan't ecologically effective meat. I'm thinking a red can, with a cartoon picture of a squirrel on a spit.
It's a modified version of the "5 gallon no waste feeder" that there's a thread about.
Here are pics of how I built the first one,
The container is a trash can. This one we have inside the coop, but for those in the run we used trash cans from Ikea. This one is slightly different, but I liked the straight sides on the Ikea buckets better.
The opening holds a storm vent I bought from a local cheap hardware chain. It has a 100mm vent, and a flapped, covered outside fitting with a small grill. I installed it inside out on the bucket and removed the flap from inside. The original design used a 90 degree angle or elbow, but I liked this one better, and it was cheaper. I just drilled a hole with a 100mm hole saw, and the vent fits snugly in that without any glue or other fastening. This thing cut down our feed waste to virtually zero. One pullet still likes to pull out some feed, but she gets maybe a quarter cup out of it daily, and most of that is eaten by the others.
The ventilation department would be where to look for such a part, while the elbows would be among plumbing supplies if you can't find a similar vent. Biltema only has stores in Scandinavia, so that exact vent would need to be shipped, which would cost a lot. But I built this feeder for about 8 euros I think. And the chickens learned to use in two minutes. Really works great.
The first pic also shows the rectangular plate with a round hole which I bought thinking I would need to secure the vent with screws, but I didn't need it. I was going to go with a pipe feeder, but I think this was a better choice, especially as the plumbing parts sold here are built to withstand quite a lot of cold, and it would have ended up costing three times more with those. Inside the coop I installed one of these feeders and a waterer on a service door, they flip out together with the door when opening it to allow easy maintenance.
This pic shows how it is installed. My first feeder was rubbish though, and the one pictured in the earlier pics is now mounted on the door instead of the one shown here. I just didn't have a picture of the updated one.
Yes, I love that thread. I have my list made out to go to Lowe's to get the 3" schedule 40 90 degree elbow with flange. My birds are smaller and I'm building a smaller one instead of a 4" elbow
We have a new amendment to our state constitution on the ballot tomorrow. I'm wary of it. The title is 'Right to Farm'. The wording is so vague, any conflicts that arise will have to be worked out in court. Corporations have the money for that. Monsanto and out of state interests are big backers. I'm leaning no. The basis of the amendment is already law so why a constitutional amendment?
When I first heard about this, about 2 years ago I think, I was told that it is an effort to get rid of the smaller farms and people like us with backyard chickens and gardens. Sounded like they don't even want us to raise eggs or veggies for our own use and they sure don't want us selling them to other people.
Ok, I miss ONE day and you guys have so many threads going at once I got a headache trying to sort out who was talking about what!
Let's see if I got this right;
there is another screwed up farm bill
someone is starting a gourmet canned roadkill and/or squirrel business with Diva on the label
a bunch of people either did or didn't eat out as kids
somebody is thinking of having bbq'd Pit Bull
Bamadude hit Bingo!!!
Is that about right?
All I have to say is that if my mother had ever lost her can opener I would have starved to death so I was very grateful for school hot lunch and take out burgers!!!
(oh and my Granny and her wonderful home cooking)

Chicki you summed all that up pretty good. But these days you don't need a can opener just a brick and scrub the top of the can on the brick and squeeze the can and it opens. That is what the survivalists say anywho... lol
