The Old Folks Home

I have a Muscovy drake and hen that I'm going to process soon. Have read the they don't taste like poultry, so we'll see.

Duck is a lot meatier than chicken, it has more taste.

I've had duck in restaurants, but I haven't had Muscovy, which people claim is more like beef than poultry.

CC, that sounds delicious. I have a weird relationship with cilantro. With tuna, it works, in small amounts. But in most foods, I really dislike it. Then again, I like coriander. Very weird.

How are things over there? This latest tragedy must have stirred up quite a commotion?
Not so weird, the seeds taste a lot different than the leaves.
Turnips don't taste anything like turnip greens either.

There are arrests as I type this in Ferguson due to the protests that have been ongoing through the night and this morning. The people keep showing up at the police station and they keep arresting.
The off duty cop that killed the kid last week has ongoing protests in mid-town St. Louis. Some said the kid had a gun, others said it was a sandwich.
There have also been protests downtown.
All night last night and all day today large crowds of protestors have occupied the University of St. Louis campus.
The killing that surprised me because it didn't spur more in the line of protest was the guy police killed in the middle of the afternoon a couple weeks after the Ferguson incident. He had a knife, a mental problem and was wandering aimlessly on the street where I grew up. Police arrived, told him to get down, he took a couple steps toward them and they unloaded on him at a distance of about 25 feet. I watched the whole video the day it happened. I guess they have orders to shoot to kill. It was clear they could have just taken out a knee and apprehended him. They also were armed with stun guns but chose to kill him instead. I guess that's thinning the herd.
Maybe Wisher can answer this but I thought subduing would be the desired approach rather than shooting to kill. This guy clearly needed psychiatric help, well not any more, just a casket.

In spite of all that, October is usually a lot of fun around here, as is most of the year. The Cardinals are usually in the playoffs, lots of Halloween related things and other events for all tastes.
The National League Championship Series baseball games and the start of hockey season this past weekend made downtown a very crowded area.

Among all the Halloween venues is "The Darkness" with more than 35,000 square feet of sheer terror awaiting guests in an old warehouse in historic Soulard. There are also events at Purina Farms, the Magic House, Six Flags, the zoo, the Botanical Garden, the Science Center, the Abyss at Lemp Brewery and several of our haunted houses.

Yesterday was the Columbus day parade and Italian festival.

The festival delivers ‘art made fresh daily’ celebrating the work and inspiration of American artists, with a stellar lineup of experiences happening everyday inside concert halls, museums, theaters, galleries, universities and outdoor spaces throughout the St. Louis region."\

cilantro tastes soapy to me if there it too much.

I do like it in Tortilla soup though.

Cilantro is a must for ceviche and therefor a must in my garden. I grow a lot of it and if I run out, there's the Asian/Latin market that has very inexpensive produce.
Along with red and white onions, Roma tomatoes and Serrano chilies all I need is some sushi grade seafood and I can whip up some awesome ceviche.

I have a handful of weapons around but I'm not on parole.
Just 22 and 38 cal revolvers, a 12 gauge single shot, a 22 semi-auto rifle and an old 7 mm Mauser.

Quote: I have no problems with wepons.... kept in a safe place where someone who doesnt know they are there and pulls something off the top shelf in the closet to have a shot gun fall on the floor.... Never had guns myself till recently.... But I was always taught "The guns are always loaded".... always.

a little Foreknowledge would have been nice. In both cases.... sigh.

We have Muscovy....I asked the kids, for the three feasts that are coming up,

Do you want roast Muscovy, goose, or turkey? ALL five boys voted for a roasted Muscovy at each feast, (no turkey and no goose) and the rest of the Muscovy are to be made into pastrami.

We love Muscovy, and it is different from 'regular' duck.

Plucking was really hard. Next time I think I'll let it soak in cold water to completely saturate the feathers and down, then I'll dunk it in hot water.

-Kathy
I think that I have heard that Dishwashing detergent in the water will help it penetrate the feathers.
