The Old Folks Home

Dsqard - I was walking throught the yard one day and looking at the chickens as they foraged. I noticed that my roo was trying to get a BSL hen to move back closer to the others and was having a hard time of it. The closer I got to them, the more I realized that I didn't know that hen! Then, I saw another BSL that didn't belong to me. I only have one neighbor within 3 miles that has chickens and he lives about a half mile away. I called him and said, "Hey, are you missing some chickens?" He said, "No, I don't miss them one bit!" He had decided they were too mean to his younger pullets and just dropped them off at my house. He said I wasn't home and he didn't think I would mind so he just left them. He added that if I didn't want them, he would come down and shoot them while I was at work. It wasn't that I didn't want them, it was I would have prefered to quarantine them before putting them with mine, but by then it was too late. He was new to chickens and didn't know, so I didn't make a big deal out of it.

WIsher, you are making me think about getting a gate up sooner rather than later. I'm always worried about drop offs, epecially now that my flock has been tested and I"m really strict about quarentine.

TIc-- I resemble that ol' bird!!!

Good news-- I have a few SS developing. Initally I was a bit disappointed at the less than 50% development, but then I realized they have only been incubating all of three days. WHOOOT. My eye is getting keen at seeing a tiny blob and thread. I"m thinking a few others are likely to dev too. Practicing patience.

I need to be a little understanding as most of these eggs are not only OLD but got very COLD. Yup counting my chickens before they're hatched !!!

I won an auction for Bresse and they wound up being about 30 miles away. One was leaking when it got here, so they should take a lesson from Wisher...I candled yesterday and the 13 all had veins!

Exciting!
