The Old Folks Home

While I was up in NY visiting I got a nasty cold/flu

I haven't been sick in years and it sucked that it happened while visiting.

My dad always called getting sick in the spring like we always do 'goose fever', cause it would
be the same time the geese are flying back.
An old timers saying he says. Must be the 'old timers' new geese were desease carrying vermin.

I would love to change my avatar BUT IT IS STILL SNOWING!!!!

Noooooooooooooooooooo!

I'm so sorry.

No snow for us in the 10 day forecast.

Quote: That is so much helpful info CC! Thank you. I already ordered the timer. Thanks!
I thought if you washed the bloom off the eggs the chicks would not do well or they would not hatch.
I don't have that many birds to keep up with. Right now I only have 5 hens and three toms. But there are times I would like to wash some of the eggs.

I am keeping logs on how many eggs a day I collect and how many I put in the bator and how many hatch to try to get some ideas.

It is very hard to wash the bloom off. Poultry studies show that cleaning the eggs will not hurt hatch rates. Steralizing can keep some flock illnesses from being passed on.

There is even a way by using high heat(104 I think) for 48 hours during the first part of incubation to kill MG!

It lowers hatch rate by 25% but it kills the virus.

Down to 4 turkey eggs. One ended up cracking, dying and rotting. Peee-uuuuueeew.

No idea how it cracked.

Looks like 2/3 duck eggs I put in have started. Not ready to give up on the 3rd just yet but I'm 99% sure it's a dud.

Ron-- hoping the best for your wife. ANd prayers too.

Dsqards-- glad you have recovered from the new bug you were exposed to in a new land.

As SCG said, lots of sun here. Garden is dry and needs a drink. Hard to watch the run off heading in the wrong direction.

Cool shrimp bags-- great repurposing too! No hatching going on here yet-- still cleaning up after that horrific winter. One hen is trying to go broody; rabbit excaped but found shleter before becoming coyote puppy food; branches and sticks are everywhere. Lots of raking ahead still. Spring is here!!!!
