The Old Folks Home

Yup SCG and I were ready for everything but the snow we encountered. Before I left Stockton, the coldest it was supposed to get was 70 degrees at Zion so of course I only packed one pair of pants "just in case". I packed mainly shorts and short sleeve shirts. We were almost hypothermic on Friday (the day it snowed) and Saturday (because we were foolish enough to try the narrows hike where the river is the path). Thank goodness for nice hot baths and warm lunch sandwiches. We did get spectacular photos. If you ever go to Zion, do the Overlook trail. It is long (8 miles round trip) but completely worth the work for the views. We did Angel's Landing on a prior visit and we both agree the Overlook trail beats Angel's Landing hands down. All of these photos are from the first day. SCG discovered a "ghost town" near by and we went there around sunset.

These are from our first full day of hiking. We did Hidden Canyon, Overlook trail and the Emerald Pools (lower, middle and upper). Diva we did have to stop for ice cream after we finished the Overlook trail because by that time we had hiked about 10.5 miles. We did between 13 and 14 miles of hiking that day. We were very tired by the end of the day.

As for unwanted critters, I prefer the DYI 5 gallon bucket and popcan trap. totally harmless to anything else and can be very entertaining

Very effective anywhere outdoors or in outbuildings. Inside we use sticky traps and the plastic version of the snap trap. A bit more expensive than the original wood ones but very easy to release the corpse without having to get near the nasty end.
I tried one of those--the 5 gallon bucket did not work with the huge rats here.

Spectacular scenery. Did you by chance happen to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab while you were there? They've got a fabulous set-up and it's very scenic...they used to film a lot of westerns and the Lone Ranger series at the compound before it was repurposed for aniimal rescue purposes. Any old western where you see the stagecoach rounding the bend or Tonto creeping along in his cave was filmed there. (Kanab is kind of a fun destination in itself and centrally located to many of Utah's scenic wonders)

Sounds like an active trip, but what a feast for the eyes and soul!

Peep we did not get as far south as Kanab this time. We drove by that animal sanctuary in the past though. I remember seeing it along highway 89. We also learned that they did shoot part of a Clint Eastwood movie in Zion back in the 70's I think the lady said. I also am convinced they shot part of Outlaw Josey Wales in old Pariah canyon before some vandals burned down the western set there. I was really sad to find that out when DH and I went there on one of our trips to the Kanab area. The set was washed away by a flood and they rebuilt it on higher ground then some teenagers came and burned it down years later. People are just so aggravatingly stupid sometimes. :/
