The Old Folks Home

Morning everyone!!!

Sorry for all the single response posts but I was so far behind again! We are actually above freezing this morning!!!!

Won't last long but I can hear snow sliding off the roof! This makes the DH so happy.

The weather was incredibly windy yesterday but warm enough that I was actually able to do a major cleanout on the coop which makes the chooks so happy. They love helping me by properly arranging the clean the woodchips on the catch board under the roost bar and spreading out the new hay on the floor for me. But, the crazy birds literally stand there and yell at me the entire time I am cleaning the nestboxes then immediately jump in put things back "in order" as soon as I'm done.

Can't remember the last time the conditions were good enough to be able to do that in February, crazy weather.

This morning the girls are thrilled as they run around actually finding spots where there is that green stuff they haven't seen in months instead of snow! Enjoy it girls, the weatherman says it's back to normal by Monday. (oh, and everybody's getting crawly checked this afternoon

Thanks Chicki. My teeth started crumbling when I was in my early twenties. My teeth would look good and not show any problems on xrays but I could bite into a piece of gum and my tooth would just crumble to pieces. Then dentists tried for many years to save most of my teeth. But it is long over due to get these out.
Mine were actually in fairly decent shape until I went on the chemo drugs. Now I already have (had) a partial on bottom that is very soon to be a full and.................., sigh.

Scg I also have severe panic attacks when I go to the dentist. I have to take nerve pills to get in the chair and have the dentist nearly sedate me. I have a dentist appt. coming up to get all my bottom teeth pulled and have a denture put in. I had the top done 7 years ago.
But I am a nervous wreck just thinking about it!

That is very understandable. Getting a bunch of teeth pulled is a far cry from a cleaning!

These were in the newspaper so I'm going to say they're safe for here. My mom clipped them out and mailed them to me after my last dentist appointment. The second one pretty much sums up that appointment.

Ouch. Sounds like you need a new dentist SCG!

And while your hens were fixing up the nest boxes they were saying to each other "You just CAN NOT get good help anymore".

We had massive winds last night, gusting about 45 MPH around 1 AM. "Calmed down" to a fairly steady ~25 MPH by 7 AM, only 20 MPH now. "Warm" today (48F) but it is supposed to drop down below freezing around 4 or 5 PM tomorrow, 9F Monday night and stay below freezing until noon Wednesday.

Update on my broody. A cat showed up and got into a fight with our broody last night. A bunch of her eggs got broke and the mess got all over the unbroken eggs. We moved her to the small side of the coop with the babies and the few eggs she has left. But now we have no idea when or if any of these eggs will hatch. She and her chicks will be safer in this side of the coop since we have chicken wire around 1/2 of the pen that is made with 2x4 welded wire. She has not given up sitting on these eggs. I guess I will try to candle them in a couple of days after she calms down.

Arg! What a pain!

Sorry about that!

Thanks all for the hatching wishes...

Diva, I had no ice cream, but I did eat some cake. :D

As to hatching...

Most of the pure Doms are out, a total of 9 as of now.

3 of my expensive crosses leghorns crossed with the Black Ameraucana. Of those, only one must have been from the white Leghorns, only one white chick. My other leghorns are brown or black.

I now have 3 of my olive eggers out. The one early chick, with two more.

Three of my spitz are pipped and right now considering unzipping.

I can't see a single pip in any of the pure Ameraucana eggs. :barnie

As to divider, I used a piece of cardboard with a bunch of holes punched in it.

I am gunna have to research the difference between a pea comb, rose comb, and walnut comb at hatch, or I will never be able to figure out which chick is which.

Except for the one white chick, i have a SEA of black chicks.

We took one chick out when I removed egg shells... Way too many shells in there, some were capping unhatched eggs, so they had to be yanked off and chunked out.

Don't worry, he went back in after we took photos.

Rose comb? Or walnut?

Alaskan I kinda lean toward walnut comb. If you want more expert opinion post at "what breed or gender is this." just to ask about comb. He/she is cute as the dickens.

You have a good camera, did one of you sons take the pictures? I was fooling around with my Fuji point & shoot digital and tried moving some settings around. (can't find manual) and I think I really messed it up. Used to take very sharp photos.- not anymore. It's several years old maybe it's just worn out.

When I press on the shutter button some kind of warning pops up, a hand making a stop gesture but I don't know what it wants me to do. If only women designed cameras they would have no nonsense icons.
