The Old Folks Home

Only somebody from the Great White North would think that!!

Here, I don't look for a frost for about 2 maybe 3 weeks yet.

Scott

We get frost here in the Sacramento Valley too. It even gets down to 28degress sometimes. That messes up the Citrus though....

The coldest Temp Recorded here(Woodland) is 18degrees...above 0....

My multi quote button is AWOL so I will have to wing it.

Ron - Thanks for the "Good Luck", I am really hoping to win. I have a couple of ovations, which I appreciate, so I hope that will help my chances. I have always wanted an EcoGlo, but have not been able to justify spending that much - YET.

Tns - I'm really excited about your package of flowers. You know, it is an old superstitution that if you say "thank you" for a gift of a live plant, the plant will die. No matter how much I appreciate it or how excited I am to get them, or how wonderful you are for sending them, or even how much I mean it, I won't tell you "thank you"!! But I will post those pics!

SCG - Scott - I am not expecting a frost until around the first of December. We may have a few dips to near freezing in late November, but the days will be warm enough to keep the soil from freezing for quite a while. Last year, we only had two or three hard freezes overnight and they were only for one or two nights at a stretch. all winter long.

Oz - Hush! Now you're just bragging!

I was not meant to be bragging. I too believe that you should turn the lights off early. Apart from the fact that the chicks dont really need it, Its a horrible waste of energy.

I like the idea of a small corner that the chicks can seek refuge to warm up in during really cold weather.

A small Ohio brooder (a poor man's eco-glo) would be perfect.

I completely agree with Wisher. Heat only when they're chicks and only when they're really young chicks. I used to follow the 95 degrees for a week and then reduce by 5 degrees a week until you hit ambient temp. That is way too long with a heat lamp! And I changed the instant I saw my broodies and their chicks running around in freezing temps, enjoying life. I have to say I think they do feather out faster, and are healthier when handled like that. I make sure to watch them of course and adjust the heat as needed based on their behavior, but mine are usually off the heat by about 2 weeks, when they have all their wing feathers and their chest and back are starting to come in. I also move mine out to the coop around 4-6 weeks, regardless of temp, and I generally hatch in January, and obviously live in Maine.

This is so awesome! I can't wait to see the pictures, also.

And you haven't had a frost, yet?

Nope...not yet. I'll be giving out more flowers come spring, so all y'all should have some. I need to make room for more in my garden.
