The Old Folks Home

Quote: Once upon a-time I used to live in a place called the U.P. of MI . Lake Superior did freeze all the way over the 1st winter, not a good winter, even the locals were upset! I know about the season known as winter and how long it can last!

It's a precursor to snow.

Let me remind you what snow is:

It's that frozen white precipitation that is supposed to happen in the season known as winter.

Now I won't mention that winter lasts 6 months in some places.
That white stuff looks horrible.

Just kidding. Actually I once had a house in PA that I had to dig out from a few times.

Reminds me of a story.

When my niece was over from the Philippines once she said - "wow, America is very fancy - they even have air-con outside"

Middle TN is set to receive our 1st frost tonight! I hate cold weather so much. It is 70 degrees in my house right now and I am freezing, but too cheap to turn on the heat. Due to all the rain, I saw somewhere on BYC to cover a run using clear plastic shower curtains. Naturally I tried it. It did not work....what do y'all use to cover your runs? The rain collected on the curtains and they ripped due to the heaviness of the water collected on the top. I am open for cheap suggestions.

I just let mine get wet...They have a nice dry coop but are do not use it in the rain.

Silly Chickens!

Quote: Maybe cover with a tarp during that time? Sure would be free food to entertain the girls.

Lovely little coop-- very stylish.

Quote: ds-- where you been?? DId you get the winter hay put up??

Quote: Only somebody from the Great White North would think that!!

Here, I don't look for a frost for about 2 maybe 3 weeks yet.

We haven't had a frost here yet-- and I don't expect one for a while . . . which mean mother nature will throw a curvbe ball and the frosty morning will be here sooner than I want. Love the fall; begroan the winter.

We've had frost the last three mornings. :/ It's a comin. At least the days are really nice. The fall colors here are just gorgeous. It's nice to see the snow on the mountains, and not down here yet. I can wait a bit longer. All this week we will be in the 60's during the day, and only down into the 40's at night. Not too bad. :) Going to add more tarp over the run area, so the girls will have more room without snow. Putting the straw down by this weekend while the weather is good. Think we have some moisture coming next week..snow..or rain..that..is the question. Hope it stays snow up high in the mountains for a while longer.

scg-- snow pics are banned for another 4 weeks please. lol

Quote: I let mine get wet . my free ranging birds hide in the horse trailers, under the porch, and under tarps. Probably the wet came in from the rain on the ground. Perhaps add a trench onthe high side to move water away, and the shouer curtain, and see if that works.

Arielle, I did get the hay put up a couple of weekends ago. My computer has been on the fritz and I had to take it in. The hard drive was going bad. Thank goodness they were able to get all of my pictures off it and onto an external hard drive.

RPM (<---- love this!)

I think the shower curtains work well on the sides for wind breaks. On the top, use a tarp but make sure it is sloped or tented to keep the rain/snow from pooling there. You can build a frame out of wood or PVC to support the tarp, OR you could make a permanant covering out of poly or metal roofing!

I have a tractor-ish pen that I call a "ground run" that my handicapped duck is using now. I keep a tarp over one end and just lift the corner to dispatch any water that collects, it's a pain, at times, but it would be too heavy to move if I covered it with roofing materials. I hoped I helped.
